Terrell Suggs anyone?
The talk of the offseason will be LB or WR. I think both can be addressed because the Giants will have unusual flexibility this offseason. The Giants have 2 second and 2 fifth round draft picks available to maneuver into the top of the draft if they desire to. Also, by exercising a loophole in Darcy Johnson's contract, the Giants will add an extra 7.2mm to their cap number making it 130.2mm for next season.

Here is my idea. With the extra money, target Terrell Suggs to play OLB. That would finally give the Giant defense an impact player at LB and Pierce can still be the brains of the defense. Next, couple some of those extra draft picks and move as far into the top ten as you can. Certainly the Kansas City Chiefs need more than one player and would not draft offense with their horrid front seven.
That is the perfect spot to target because Crabtree will most certainly be drafted by Seattle at the 4 spot. I know this seems crazy but it is not impossible given the assets the Giants have available this offseason. Reese should think "Yankee" this offseason and not "Mets" (who refuse to sign a player that not only complete's their team but would make them THE baseball story in New York but I digress).
It can be done. Crabtree and Suggs. Jacobs gets re-signed and we say goodbye to Toomer(4mm cap savings).

Stick with what works
Reese keeps striking gold with his picks from the bottom.
I think he’ll find some more gems this year around without trading up.
thats not really a sound policy
and he hasnt really stuck gold with a LB…..his first 2 drafts have proved to be remarkably productive, yes, but we cant base our success on him finding gems….the D desperately needs an impact LB, preferably an OLB
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
No way the Giants end up with Suggs
He’s going to command top dollar. I don’t think that Reese allocates that huge of a cap # to one player.
Off all of the Ravens guys – the guy I could see the Giants making a real run at is Bart Scott. Its almost like the Kawika Mitchell situation when he left the Chiefs. The Chiefs had a bunch of free agents that year and retained (if I remember correctly) Donnie Edwards over Mitchell. Mitchell felt left out and was hurt by that (I remember reading an interview with him where he stated as much) and signed with the Giants with a chip on his shoulder.
Re: the Ravens, there is no way they can afford to keep all three of those guys. I think RayRay gives them a slight hometown discount, and they will do whatever is possible to retain Suggs.
Bart Scott on the other hand….could come at a nice price. And he’s a young, solid LB.
Trading up
I hate, hate, hate, hate trading up. I would love to see someone study the value of moving up. I think it’s a crapshoot, and I think more often than not teams end up regretting giving up the picks and putting all their chips on a single player. It’s about depth, and you don’t get it when you trade away your draft picks hoping for the single super star.
I hate it too.
Maybe not hate, hate, hate it. But I feel drafts are a crapshoot anyway to a degree. There are almost no “sure things” and if you want one, you’re going to have to give up more than you should.

With the exception of Eli?
Over time, Eli’s performance has reconciled me to those draft picks it took to get him (especially considering the way SD used them.) It would be nice having Merriman at LB for us. Then again, he was out all year. Who knows how good he’ll be when he returns?
I'd rather have Kenny Britt and a LB than Michael Crabtree.

Crabtree
I don’t see the fascination with Crabtree. Yes he has the size and made some great plays this year at Tech, but anyone trading up to get him is taking a huge gamble on his success. Drafting a WR high in the draft is anything but a sure pick. Keep in mind Mike Williams, from USC, was a great college player, got drafted high by the Lions and was a complete bust. No doubt we need to add to our WR group, but I dont think the situation is urgent enough to warrant a big move in the first round.
Mike Williams
had to sit out an entire year before he could play in the NFL b/c he tried to leave after his sophomore year. Also, he wasn’t nearly as dominant in college as Crabtree has been, who has been named WR of the year his first two seasons playing.
A better comparison might be Peter Warrick, who truly was dominant in college but sucked in the NFL.
What if Crabtree turns out to be Steve Smith? He has superior speed and catches everything thrown
at him. I’m not sure if Crabtree was featured enough on Tv but let me tell you this kid is the real deal and the best WR in this draft. Comparing him with Peter Warrick is premature at best as is comparing him to Steve Smith. But here is the deal: who would you bet on becoming a star player Crabtree or Britt?
Britt to me is Amani Toomer, big, but slow with solid hands. Crabtree is a game changing playmaker.
IMO
I never said
Crabtree wouldn’t be good. I’m just saying the comparison to Mike Williams was off, b/c Crabtree is much better than Williams was and doesn’t have to sit out a year. Warrick, on the other hand, was just a bust – no real explanation for it.
I think Crabtree is going to be very good, though I don’t think he’s quite as physically gifted as Calvin Johnson or as good of an all-around receiver as Larry Fitzgerald, who were the last two similarly hyped college receivers.
No, I agree, he will not be Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson but I do think he could be a Burress
type player. Just one level below the Fitzgeralds of the world but I do think he is faster than Burress and both are close in height and weight(6’3" 214 vs 6’5" 235). Crabtree just looks to be a big, sturdy deep threat. In a perfect world he would be Michael Irvin but that is wishful thinking. I just think the Giants should take a chance on him. They are the only team that is in position to gamble on a talent like that. (save pittsburgh)
whats going on my fellow giant fans. this is a first time post…… here we go. the draft is deep with linebackers. they said the deepest in recent years. we can grab a olb and a wideout without trading or anything. k.britt is a good college wr who i like is Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland, big guy fast. or even Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri – 6’1- 200. can you say GAMEBREAKER. when was the last time we had a speedy wideout. who needs a crabtree when we have PLAX- HE’S NOT GONE YET!!!!!
+1 A lot of Crabtree’s numbers were because of his system. Same with the WR at Mizzou. I think Britt comes from more of a pro style O and could do just as well.
j. maclin is a threat everytime he touched the ball. not to mention he can return kicks and punts with the best of them. we can have a top 5 draft class. im against trading up. just for thought what if we converted julius pepers to olb. the guy can play any position on the feild. can u say L.T. potential. GIVE J PEPERS THE MONEY??
Maclin
reminds me of DeSean Jackson a bit. I wouldn’t be upset if he fell to us and we took him, but I don’t think he’s worth trading up for. I’d prefer a big receiver to a fast one.
Speaking of LB's
Kiper has Maualuga dropping to the Lions at the 20th pick. He has us taking Laurinitis a few picks later. Personally, I think Maualuga is heads and shoulders better than Laurinitis, and if that scenario pans out, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Giants trade up a few picks with the Lions to pick him up. The Lions should be looking to pick up more picks, so they might be willing to make this trade.
I don't think either one is better than Terrell Suggs who is still in his mid-twenties.
WR are a better bet to make an impact right out of college than LB’s are IMO. I’d much rather sign Suggs and draft a wideout. I do agree that Laurinitis is over rated.
