Coaching carousel update; Spags to Rams?

Will New York Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo be the next head coach of the St. Louis Rams? If he is going to be a head coach anywhere next season, it looks like it is the Rams or bust for Spags.

The Detroit Lions have hired Jim Schwartz. Spagnuolo interviewed with the New York Jets again Thursday, but most of the reports I have read indicate that job will go to either Rex Ryan or Brian Schottenheimer.

'Turf Show Times,' our Rams' blog is predicting that Spagnuolo will be the Rams coach. Oddly, they are indicating that a possible holdup is that is seems Spagnuolo might be insisting on GM-like authority over personnel.

NFL.com's Adam Schechter says Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is the favorite, not Spagnuolo.

It is fine with me if the Rams pass on Spags, too.

  • Kevin Gilbride interviewed with the Oakland Raiders Thursday. But the Contra Costa Times indicates that Tom Cable is already interviewing assistant coaches, so it looks like he will be Raiders' head man.
  • The Giants did lose an assistant coach Thursday. Assistant offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo has been hired as line coach by the Miami Dolphins.

for the first time today

i think the Philly loss officially sunk in. i can’t watch any sports-related coverage because seeing Cards-Eagles NFC Championship game previews make me depressed.

i would recommend to all of you (at least those of you that haven’t done this) to buy the Giants’ Road to XLII DVD. it has five full-length games on it, including the regular season finale and all four playoff games. it cheers me up.

I'm telling you....

Heart of hearts, Spags doesn’t want to leave the Giants.

it would seem that way JRS

Maybe he’s sort of thinking, “the only way I would leave here is for a PERFECT situation” (ie control over personnel, $$, etc.).

Like it or not (and as Gmen fans, we love this) but the New York Giants ARE one of the glamour organizations in the NFL. So Spags (as you know) likely gets rock star treatment in New York.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather get that than live in St. Louis (no offense to the midwest)

to be fair

I’ve never heard a bad thing about St. Louis. And they are some of the most loyal fans in the country (at least regarding the Cardinals). But yea, you’re right about the Giants being a plum job.

Loyal Fans?

I am interested in the statement about how loyal the St Louis Fans really are. I don’t know first hand whether they are or are not loyal, but I do remember hearing earlier in the year when their losing streak was becoming unbearable that their was speculation the team was going to move out of St. Louis. Of course, the only reason I heard that was being in LA, any speculation about another team having problems with attendance and local support instantly develops into the story that “Is this LA’s next team?”

Btw, St Louis is a great town. Great people, easy to access downtown, cheap beer and i believe they have Riverboat gambling thanks to East St. Louis (which is in IL) and the riverboat gaming laws of IL.

well

the football fans might not be so loyal. But I know they are pretty hardcore about the Cardinals, and are generally rated “the best baseball fans in the country” – I just assumed some of that might carry over to football.

Might be right

Sounds like he is asking for a lot of control, which first-time coaches usually don’t get.

by Ed Valentine on Jan 16, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, and I think he should ask for his own private jet,

boxes of Cuban cigars, and a new uniform design with sequins and rhinestones. And if the Rams don’t like it, he’ll just stay where he is. :-P

DVD, etc

Good call. I bought that for like $20 at Stop&Shop. Must-see viewing considering that this year they should just call it the ShitterBowl. Seriously. What are the NFC’s odds right now?
I am not going to watch one more football game this year. I DO unfortunately have to finish the postseason pool, so I’m going Steelers/Cards (I may never pick the Eggs to win ever again) and in the Stupor Bowl, AFC regardless.
Agree with you, JRS, but Spags is going to take almost any offer right now. You just can’t not answer when opportunity knocks. Who knows, the Giants D could mysteriously suck next year and then POOF go the prospects.
Speaking of which, I am going to be looking forward to a Umenyiora/Tuck/Kiwanuka DE rotation, which I expect to be not unlike Strahan/Umenyiora/Tuck.
p.s. Strahan should have come back for a mil a game when they DE corps hit the wall around week 13

You play to win the game!

Tom Cable?!? Really?

Honestly, I’d prefer Killdrive as coach over Cable.

N.O. Saints

Well it looks like we won’t be getting the Saints’ first round pick.

Apparently they a “mutual understanding” with Jonathan Vilma that they will allow him to become a free agent and then resign him, thus relieving them of their obligation to give their 2nd round pick to the Jets which would have sent their 1st round pick to the Giants.

If I were the Giants I’d offer Vilma an offer he couldn’t refuse just to screw with the Saints.

That's Collusion

and the league shouldn’t let it happen. Otherwise it undermines all future conditional picks which I think is a good trade dynamic.

The league should make them resign him before FA or ban them from signing him if he becomes a FA.

How much longer will Coughlin be around?

He’s been in the game for a long time, so I wonder if there was any scenario in which Spagnuolo could take over in a reasonable amount of time so that he doesnt get antsy and leave, say 2 years or so.

That would certainly maintain some sort of continuity b/t coaches, which is always a tough thing for the Giants

TC

has three years left on his current contract. He has earned the right to stay for that long, and probably longer if he chooses.

by Ed Valentine on Jan 16, 2009 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Well I was talking about in the event he should decide to retire

Isn't it funny

after all the interest in Spagnuolo and Jason Garrett as potential head coaches, neither of them may end up with a new job next season, and yet Gilbride might? Raise your hand if you saw that one coming.

Leslie Frazier? I actually thought that was one of the sideline reporters.

Spags

Doesn’t wants to coach under his terms. I doubt it has anything to do with wanting to be a giant for life

c'mon who wouldnt want to be a Giant for life.

I assume you meant Spags want to coach on his terms only, which I respect walking into some of the messes that are left out there.

Gruden Fired

Well, just when I started to feel safer about keeping Spags, the Tampa Bay job opens up. That might be just the challenge that fits Spags. On a side note, I think the Bucs have to be pissed that Monte Kiffin left for University of TN. I think that guy would have been a good HC in Tampa.
