120 Million for Eli?

Link

The Giants will have to pay a hefty price to keep last year's Super Bowl MVP. Eli Manning's contract is due to expire after next season, and sometime in the next year - probably the next few months - the Giants will take the first steps toward making him the next member of the $100 million quarterback club.

Based on interviews with several agents and personnel people, Eli Manning appears to be in line for a seven- or eight-year contract worth $110 million-$120 million with $40 million in guarantees.

That could be mean roughly 15M per year for Eli. Im all for resigning him, plus theres no real other options, but he's cemented his status on the team and deserves an extension.....but 120M !?

I hope for that money he can learn how to handle the wind

I saw that

Wow….speechless. I mean the crazy thing to me is the mob mentality: everyone else is doing it so you just have to. You know? I mean if the Giants don’t pay him that kind of money, Minnesota would. Or Chicago might. You get the point. That’s just the going rate for top 10 QB’s. His occasional clunker aside, Eli is still a top-flight QB in the NFL.

Additionally (wow, I can’t believe I’m defending the guy) he’s still young. Phil Simms didn’t come into his own until his late 20’s. Eli is a big strong kid. He still has time to develop and get better. So now, its time for him to prove that last year wasn’t a fluke.

Unfortunately, I think the Giants have to pay him the money.

He likes NY

Is what the article was saying, so they might be bidding against themselves….he’d be foolish to leave the Giants with the core that is in place and an ownership/GM committed to spending and winning, he wont find that in Minnesota, though hed have the padded indoor stats his brother enjoys

Thats just the way it goes, every year the no 1 pick gets more money, as to free agents…but we’d have to see how much is guaranteed or whats a signing bonus etc etc, at this point we should have faith in Reese that he can make a good deal and allow him room to alter the rest of the roster

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

NY

I’ll just have to have faith in Reese that there is a good reason for this. To me it seems like too much money for a guy that probably wouldn’t leave anyway and who isn’t going to be Brady/Peyton. I do like seeing him wrapped up though, so I guess I have to trusts JR’s judgment that he’s worth that kind of dough.

It's amazing

Eli did just have the best regular season of his career. First 60% completion season, fewest interceptions and highest QB rating of his career, and his first Pro Bowl appearance.

He had a bad playoff game. So what. He’s a franchise QB and their are more Super Bowls in his future. Pay the man, and don’t think twice about it.

I don't think anyone is saying

that because Eli had one bad playoff game, we suddenly want to ship him off. I love Eli and want him to stay a long time. The point is that $120 million is a LOT of money, especially for someone that probably wouldn’t test free agency anyway. Only Vick has signed for more money than that (130 mil). Granted Eli is more valuable than the dog fighter, but Peyton & Brady both don’t even make $100 million. That is a HUGE contract. I think we are all just thrown off by that kind of money.

by potroast on Jan 15, 2009 6:24 AM EST up reply actions

agreed

and like you said, who would we be bidding against? He’s not gonna leave NY – and to be honest, if he DOES leave NY over a few million dollars, good riddance. His image would be tarnished, after the way he forced San Diego to trade him here, if he squabbles over not getting 120 Mil. And from everything I’ve seen from Eli, he doesn’t seem like the type of guy who’s gonna cause a stir over that kind of money.

one bad playoff game

against the Eggs and I DO want to kick him in the ’nads. And again in the face when he goes down.

You play to win the game!

Huge Money

I like Eli and I want him as our QB, but I just don’t see him as that “game-changing” QB like Brady or Peyton who can demand that kind of money. I do not want to tear the guy down (he is a Super Bowl MVP, afterall), but 15 Mil a year for a guy that is not going to pass for 4000 yards a season is tough to swallow. Although if he protects the ball as well as he did this year, you can’t ask for too much more than that. In the end I agree with Cody, they are going to have to pay him.

well how many Giants QBs have thrown for 4K?

Collins did it once, how did that work out? TDs and lack of turnovers are more important…he did have 3700 in 05 I believe, and in four full years as a starter hes only 2 shy of 100 TDs and hes had four straight years of 3,000 yds/20TDs and playoff appearances….so he’s worthy of being one of the best paid OBs, but 120 million is a lot, but Im sure that’ll be topped by RIvers someday or Matt Ryan

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on Jan 14, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

I was not saying he isn’t capable of tossing for 4000 yards a season, the Giants offensive scheme is not built for that. Don’t get me wrong, I want Eli on this team for a long time, but it is hard to get over the sticker shock sometimes.

by BigBlue4Life on Jan 14, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think it could be

It would be more fun too watch, and he could certainly get 4k with Plax/Smith/Boss and Bradshaw and the line is capable of protecting him, but its not crucial to winning, the only 4K QB left in the playoffs is Kurt Warner and he has the luxury of playing indoors.

So his salary shouldnt be commensurate with his passing yds, as a lot of that is out of his control….but he mightve been closer to that had it not been for Plax, and we had 2 1,000 yard rushers….so I dont think we’ll see either of those situations replayed next year

do the giants really need him?

throw an average qb on a great team with a good line, solid defense and ground game and that team often does well. You can even throw a rookie out there sometimes. Is Eli a favorite of fans and the new york media? Not as much as other “top qbs”, he and coughlin were close to being run out of town last year.
To me, and in this economy, you lay out that much money (tho fine print and incentives change things) and you need a sure thing, no borderline maybe he will grow into the money. The risk/reward is wacky.

by vherub on Jan 14, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions

Well who would you replace him with?

I think thats the more important question-Carr? Harrington? Cassel? Grossman? Losman? Warner? Leinart? Vick?

theres no real viable alternative, Id like to see David Carr play with a real team though, I think he could be solid, hes certainly tough enough….the Arizona and Tennessee situations will result in a few guys looking for work, probably Leinart, but he doesnt have the arm to play in the meadowlands

it would be hilarious

to see a QB competition between Leinart and Vince Young in Tennessee.

by cjmulrain on Jan 14, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

agreed.

Honestly last year a mediocre QB could’ve won with what the giants had… an amazing pass rush and a great oline

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Jan 14, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

How many QBs can pull that 4th quarter comeback? You think they all can? Give me a break. There is a select few that can pull games out of the loss column when the game is on the line and Eli is one of them. A mediocre QB would have folded under those circumstances. Give the man his due.

by potroast on Jan 15, 2009 6:28 AM EST up reply actions

eli is great at the comeback and 2 minute drill situations

Which leads one to believe the offense would play more hurry up, but thats what you get with Gilbride

The question is not the $$ amount but whether Eli is really the guy

Squabbling over the dollar amount is not the point. If Eli were really a game-changing QB we wouldn’t be having this conversation; we’d pay him and be happy. The more concerning question is the number of years for which we would lock him up. While Eli played well in last year’s playoff run and had strong stats this season, I don’t think Eli will ever be one of the elite QBs in the league. He can keep his cool under pressure and manage the game (usually), but he is not a QB who makes things happen. When composed, he can plug into a well-run offense with a strong running game and be flanked by one of the best defenses in the league. But I don’t want to see Eli have to carry the team without elite receivers, the loss of Ward, and a Spag-less defense. The guy can’t throw a spiral for crying out loud; he without question had one of the ugliest balls in the NFL. As the NFL network says, he also qualifies as one of the league’s double agents — a QB who can do as much harm as good for his team. Many QBs don’t reach their greatest potential until several years in; Eli is at that exact turning point where we will find out who he really is as a QB — but we’re/he’s not there yet. Either way, he still hasn’t proven that he can be an elite QB and consistently carry, not just manage, a team. Until then, we should let him play out the last year of his contract and see what he’s worth at that point. To say we should lock him up — for that amount of money and length of time — simply because we don’t see anyone else out there better right now is a pretty sad state of affairs! That’s like staying with a bad lover simply because your lonely or bored. The storied Giants franchise deserves better. Who would be better than Eli if he plays next season as he did last week and we decided not to re-sign him? Anyone who can throw a spiral!

Wow

Most of my friends are die-hard Giants fans that are not big fans of Eli at all. But this is the first time I have seen a Giants fan on this site share the same opinions.

Good points, but...

I believe management is fully committed to him.
