Offseason

It sucks having to focus on this, but it's time to focus on the offseason.

Sigh...I know.

Anyway, let's look at a positions of need:

Star-divide

WR: The most glaring one on Sunday. Hixon is good, and I could see him as a useful complementary reciever in the future. Steve Smith is the main man out of the slot. But, we're missing that #1 go to guy. We really have three possible options. First of all, we could sign T.J. Houshmandzadeh. He's really the only capable #1 reciever on the market, so a second option would be to make a trade. We're stocked with draft picks and depth at many positions, so I don't see this as being a problem. Someone like Anquan Boldin would be an excellent, excellent pickup. If none of these options work, we have no choice but to draft a WR in the first two rounds of the draft. I PERSONALLY would love to see Kenny Britt for us. He's big, physical, from the area, and will likely be available.

LB- Up until Plaxgate, the most glaring weakness on this team. I love AP, but he's really reaching the twilight of his effectiveness as a starting calibur MLB. Also, we don't really have anyone too intimidating on the outside. Therefore, we need to sign someone to play linebacker. The Ravens have Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Bart Scott up for new contracts after this year. At least one of them will probably fall through the cracks, most likely Scott. Karlos Dansby, Eric Barton, Mike Peterson, Jonathan Vilma, Michael Boley, James Farrior, Channing Crowder, Willie McGinest, etc. are all available. This is also a position I would upgrade in the draft, even if we sign someone.

HB, TE, DT, SS, and CB are all positions that could have more depth going into next year as well. I could get more specific, but I might save that for another post. Either way...Go Giants?

I agree 100%

Houshmandzadeh needs to be a Giant next year and I would love for us to sign Ray Lewis I know he is up in age but he still has that fire in him and he can get a defense motovaited he showed that this season. Also our defense showed they need that against the Eagles.

I do hear you, but...

It is nice to dream, but Ray Lewis is never leaving Baltimore. It would take a huge contract and a longer term deal to get it done for a guy that probably has 1 to 2 seasons in him. I watched what he did this year too, but I just don’t see the value in paying the premium it would take to get him at this stage.

Also, here is what Scouts Inc. says on TJ. I personally have not seen the guy play too much b/c watching the bengals would be as bad as ripping an eye out and eating it. ANyway, reading this makes me questions the #1 WR everyone thinks he is.

2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 82 | Key
Alert: None

Comment: Houshmandzadeh put together an exceptional 2007 season. His reception totals and number of touchdowns has increased every year he has been in the league. He is no longer a young receiver and has probably peaked, but he still ranks amongst the best possession receivers in the league. He is a terrific route-runner who is intelligent in how he sets up defenders and sells specific routes. Houshmandzadeh has very reliable hands, consistently plucks the ball away from his body and rarely drops passes he should haul in. He has become an outstanding red zone threat who has the trust of his quarterback and shields defenders really well. He is fearless, competitive and does some of his best work over the middle of the field. He is effective from any wide receiver position and is a student of the game. Houshmandzadeh isn’t a blazer, but he continually gets separation due to his route-running prowess. He will not run past many cornerbacks in this league and isn’t a top deep threat. Houshmandzadeh catches plenty of touchdowns and moves the chains, but he is not a vertical threat. He does the majority of his work underneath. He has been a durability concern in the past. Some of Houshmandzadeh’s production is derived from all the attention Chad Johnson receives on the opposite side. That being said, he is an ideal No. 2 receiver and is the player Carson Palmer looks to when he needs to move the chains.

everyone thought

Plaxico was a #2 receiver when he was with the Steelers. Honestly though, I’d sign TJ AND try to bring back Plax. We’d have a pretty much unstoppable passing attack with that lineup.

I doubt you'll see that

The huge question will be what decision is made with Plax. It’s maybe the hardest one Reese has had to make, and I think it depends really on how TC and Eli truly feel.

Eli probably wants him

I dunno about Coughlin

I think you might be right.

If so, Eli might have to learn how to put the long ball where receivers can catch it.

DRAFT

Can someone clarify our draft status in reference to the Shockey trade ? How many 1st and 2nd round picks do we have total ? I am getting confused with all of the Vilma contingencies…

by JINTS14 on Jan 13, 2009 1:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

we get the #2 next year

Unles the Saints sign Vilma, which I understand they will not. If they did, we would get a #1 in 2010

speaking of which...

Don’t you guys think that we could likely pick up Vilma on the cheap?? Maybe he needs a change of scenery back to NY? That guy was a beast for the j-e-t-s

I would love Vilma

he’s an awesome talent

Thanks Queler...So we have a late first round pick

and two second round picks this year if the Saints don’t sign Vilma?

by JINTS14 on Jan 13, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Because if they sign Vilma, the jets get a second rounder for him and then they don’t have a second to give to us so they have to give us their first.
