Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Eli @ the Meadowlands

I'm wondering about this:

Can something be done to help Eli with these playing conditions?

I remember reading something a while back (citation necessary) that Phil Simms was the perfect QB for the Meadowlands because, while he didn't have the biggest arm out there, he threw a very tight spiral and a very accurate ball.

Eli Manning, as far as we have seen, does neither of those things well.  Even when Eli is "on" the ball still comes out of his hand (for lack of a better word) "fluttering" - he just throws a lot of ducks.  Yesterday was no different than the play we have seen from this guy at the Meadowlands in cold/windy conditions.  I don't know, is the new stadium oriented in such a fashion to prevent these winds?

Point is: something needs to change.  Palmer needs to teach him to throw a more accurate ball, Eli needs to practice in cold conditions, I don't know what can be done about this, really.  All the best WR's in the world can't save Eli when he's throwing fluttering ducks into the wind.

they should put

a retractable roof on the new stadium. Open it up when the other team has the ball, close it when we have it.

tobad that cant be done

when a retractable roof is on a stadium there are set weather conditions that its open for and set conditions its closed for the team only decides when the stadium is built what temprature its open when closed and they have to follow those guidlines

just wondering

what if it starts raining right before halftime, can they close the rof during the break

by gdizzle320 on Jan 12, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

yea

I know. But it would be pretty darn funny, kinda like how some teams have been accused of turning the air conditioning higher when they are on defense (football and baseball) and then turning it off when they are on offense. I think the Astros used to do it at the Astrodome, and the Colts at the RCA Dome, amongst others.

Be realistic here

After a lifetime of throwing I don’t think you change the way eli throws or his arm strength. Coaches are supposed to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of players and put them in positions to succeed. Instead, the giants sunday asked eli to do things that set him up for failure.

the cure for eli

you wanted to know what can help eli than i’ll tell you

RUN THE BALL

it seems like every game where the wind is brutal there is some voice in the back od Gilbrides head saying “throw the ball” example, last year week 15 vs. Washington eli fell only a few short of a new record for incompletions, he threw the ball 52 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!

my two cents

i thought Eli looked OK with the mid-range passing game yesterday. he hit Boss on a couple of nice throws in the 8-15 yard range. his only good deep throw of the day was to Hixon, who made a great over-the-shoulder grab.

i agree with Ed that ultimately Gilbride set him up for failure. the cure for Eli in the wind is more running plays and little-to-zero long passing plays. everytime Eli got in trouble was when he was trying to connect on long throws, which were called at seemingly the worst times.

don't forget

his throws were off, but he was hitting guys in the hands

by queler on Jan 12, 2009 1:44 PM EST reply actions

i believe

He tries in most off seasons to improve his spiral, which he knows his a big weakness

Hates The Wind

He has to throw it harder into the wind. He was throwing floaters which made it hard for Smith and Hixon to catch some passes. He had a few close ones, but if they were better throws, something could have happened. He either has to practice throwing in a wind machine or hope that the new Giants Stadium won’t be as windy.

Or the Giants could realize that Eli can’t throw in windy situations and hey, why not run more!

what have been the most frustrating losses in the last few years

Starting with the Skins last year, they’re all windy days

by queler on Jan 12, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

No, he just has to accept that there are certain throws you don't make into the wind

and adjust the game plan accordingly. No point in fighting Mother Nature. That was the secret of Simms’ success. It’s ugly sometimes, but it gets the job done.

New Stadium Design

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

shoot, didnt work...

Link

So its angled slightly differently and appears to be taller, so perhaps that might make the wind play differently?

They shouldve gone for the retractable roof to at least have an outside shot at getting a superbowl or even a final four.

ok a few things my dad is the lawyer for the new stadium Joseph Shenker google his name if u want

1st a retractable roof was considered but would cost about a billion extra dollars remem its tri state area things are costly arizonas stadium went up for 600 mill w/ retractable field and roof but here 1.6 billion(going higher) with neither
2nd the wind will be more pedictable in the new stadium b/c it will be much wider spread and not as tight as the current awesome bowl we have now so the wind should be normal instead of constantly swirling

If thats true, thats good

Though I dont know about the price for that roof, that seems a bit high considering how many retractable roofs there are now days, but I’ll take your word for it.

whens this thing suppose to open anyway?

the roofs are REALLY expensive

when I first read that, I had the same reaction, but then I remembered the original plans for what is now Citi Field called for a retractable roof, but they were way too expensive, so they ditched the roof.

by cjmulrain on Jan 12, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

come on, the Brewers could afford it

how bad could it be?

yep

plus, they weren’t building 2 stadiums at the same time. The city pitched in more money for their stadium than for either of ours. Of course, this is regarding the baseball stadiums. But Jersey recently ponied over money for the new Devils arena and is now paying for the new Giants stadium, so they’re dishing out a lot of money as well.

I drove by last week. The steel is up.

This is ridiculous

I am pissed too, but as other people have said
1. the gamplan set him up for failure
2. he did not have his go to receiver
3. Guys dropped balls

Eli can play in cold. He played maybe his best game ever in Lambeau field last year.

Also, it is not like Donovan set the world on fire.
McNabb:22/40 217 yds 5.4 yds per pass 1 td 2 Ints
Eli: 15/29 169 yds 5.8 yds per pass 0 td 2 Ints

by losangelesmets on Jan 13, 2009 7:55 AM EST reply actions

Eli needs more screens

screens and shovel passes work great on a windy day. It keeps the line backers back and the passes wont get caught in the wind.
