I think that the bye week will be a big factor today.
When the Eagles beat the Giants last month, the Giants were in the middle of a grueling stretch in which they had played six teams with winning records. Their third week bye came too early in the schedule to do them much good. Contrast that with the Eagles, who played a Thanksgiving night game the week before and had ten days to rest and prepare.
Now it’s the Eagles who are beat up and the Giants who are rested. Anything can happen when these teams meet, but the G-Men get the edge today.
Cards and Ravens
Turnovers were the difference in both games. How often does Carolina cough the ball up 6 times? And Baltimore was +3, negating the Titans’ clear statistical advantage.
Bye week
I think it was incredibly important for the Giants to have that bye. They were very worn down at the end of the regular season, with the grueling schedule and the fact that their bye came after Week 3 of the season. They needed the rest. Hopefully, that will translate into an effective Jacobs, and an active defensive line today.

I'm gonna be at a supposedly pro-Giants bar
in Crystal City, VA, so I won’t be here during the game. Lets hope to see a lot of this:

GO BIG BLUE
Do you think that the Peyton and Eli commercials will stop being played when they’re both sitting at home watching the Championships games next week???
by GreenInBaltimore on Jan 11, 2009 10:45 AM EST reply actions
You should know.
McNabb was still pushing Campbell’s Soup on TV after all his failures.
touche
I am just ENTIRELY over Peyton Manning and 54 sponsored deals, landing him in every commercial break, on every major network. I just tosses Eli in there since i think we’re playing you guys today.

I actually
agree with you about Peyton. I never understood the national love affair with Peyton while everyone turned Tom Brady into a villain – think about it, Peyton was born to football royalty, handed the QB position at Tennessee, was drafted #1 overall, puts up big stats b/c his coach designed a system where he could throw the ball pretty much at will, was surrounded by all-pro and even hall of fame type receivers, and yet consistently lost the big games. Brady, by comparison, had to fight to the very end for the position at Michigan (competing with a freshman Drew Henson, b/c he was a more highly touted prospect), wasn’t drafted till the 6th round, was a backup who only got in b/c the star QB got hurt, led a team with no all-pro receivers to a Super Bowl in his first year starting, and then led that team, still with no great WRs to two more Super Bowls. It wasn’t till last year that they built the system around his arm. Seems to me like Brady would be the classic underdog, while Peyton is the guy that nobody should like, yet it was always the other way around.
All that said, ever since the Super Bowl last year I’ve become a big Peyton fan, and Brady started to get on my nerves.
Peyton
I think that his appeal is based less on his record than the fact that the guy genuinely comes off likable and funny on camera, with that deadpan sense of humor. I can’t see Brady going on camera with a fake mustache.
Yeah, you're right, 48.
Peyton seems to have inborn acting skills.
I think both Warner and Collins have story lines better than those of Manning and Brady. I always root for those two (if they’re not playng the Giants.) I’m indifferent to Manning and Brady (unless they’re playing Big Blue.)
That was brutal
I had to close my eyes.

Inactives
From Mike Garafolo, here are today’s inactives for the Giants.
GIANTS
RB Danny Ware
CB Rashad Barksdale
LB Gerris Wilkinson
OL Adam Koets
DE Dave Tollefson
DT Jeremy Clark
DT Leger Douzable
WR Mario Manningham
This means Lawrence Tynes and John Carney will be active today. MG also notes that Derek Hagan is active instead of Mario Manningham. Probably a move designed to aid the special teams. Hopefully, it pays off.
just saw that too

Eli
I’m not killing him for that. It’s a terrible play call to go that deep with a throw into the wind w/bad field position. The penalties are ticking me off, though. This is not how the Giants got here.
I agree
I thought that was a horrible play call.

Turnovers have been the death knell for every losing team in the playoffs so far.

No chioce but to play a soft zone couldn't give up a TD. The front four isn't getting pressure without blitzing
Disagree
It’s something the Giants never do. They played soft all the way down the field and gave up an easy three.
by Ed Valentine on Jan 11, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions
I don't know about you but I've seen them play 6 DB's and rely on the front four to pressure
against the two minute drill. Osi and Tuck and Strahan getting sacks before the half doesn’t mean the Giants were aggressive in coverage downfield.
Most frustrating first half ever?
An inept offense that has been able to move about 5 yards all half has 10 points to show for it? 90% luck as far as I can see.

Eli is struggling
with the wind. He doesn’t throw a tight spiral or have a big, cannon of an arm. Gotta throw more of the short screens and pound the ball. Be nice if we could get a turnover from McNabb, too.
This game is too much like Ravens-Titans for comfort.
Until that last drive, we’ve outplayed them by a wide margin. I don’t think Spags should have gone to the prevent with so much time left and the wind in our favor. The D has to keep attacking, no matter what. We’ve got to run more. Eli just doesn’t have it today, and as Major points out, BJ is doing okay.

That's not the problem
The problem is the Giants can’t get any pressure on McNabb w/out completely selling out with the blitz. Any RB is going to run away from a LB if McNabb can sit back in the pocket for half an hour.

but I think his bullshit midseason drama was tiki-esque in throwing the team off the tracks. They haven’t been the same team since that crap happened.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jan 11, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed on Plax
though i still dont think what he did merits getting thrown off the team, but from the minute he signed here, we were a more explosive team….now we’re essentially back to the Toomer/Hilliard days…..no explosion or deep threats whatsoever
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Give the Eagles credit
I know we hate to, but ‘c/mon. They have played a terrific game. They made the plays, we didn’t. Let’s not go jumping off the bridge. You simply don’t win the Super Bowl every year.
by Ed Valentine on Jan 11, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions
Philly deserves the credit
Their defense played great. No one on the Giants made a play. 2 missed FGs, a horrible INT, bad officiating, Two 4th downs they were stopped, a great Philly Defense and just enough offensive plays by Philly result in a win.
As I said on their blog. Can’t root for them, but I do wish them luck. They played a great game.

You're too nice
I wish no one on any team I’m not rooting for luck.
I’m bitter as fuck, and I hope Tonya Harding’s husband is a Cardinals fan, and that he has a personal vendetta against Donovan McNabb.

Bitter?
C’mon. We won a Super Bowl last year and had a terrific regular season. It’s a disappointing finish, obviously, and not what we hoped for. But, I can’t be bitter. We got beat, it happens.
by Ed Valentine on Jan 11, 2009 4:16 PM EST up reply actions
Of course I can be bitter
you watch an entire season where we played like the best team all year, probably on the verge of building a mini-dynasty, and we just fall to shit at the end of the year, culminating in a loss to a team that has to thank God every day to even be in the playoffs.

Plax
This team was never the same without Cheddar Plax. Eli missed him a lot and the Giants need to look to replace him this offseeason.
We will talk about that a lot

Bad Eli showed up today.
I don’t blame Plaxico for this. How many receivers did he miss in the 1st hald?
Save the neck for me, Clark.
Eli
I think there were too many deep throws. Not all his fault, but he didn’t play well.
by Ed Valentine on Jan 11, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions
I think him having twins just at the right moment
in his life settled him down, and he is playing well. I also like him if for no other reason than Rush Limbaugh doesn’t. Still, I don’t care for his antics whatsoever.
Save the neck for me, Clark.
to victors go the spoils
Today he’s the Victor. Having lived in Philly McNabb is a class act and one of the reasons people like taking shots at him.
I'm not following -
you’re saying people in Philly like to take shots at McNabb BECAUSE he’s a class act? That makes no sense, other than Philadelphians being a-holes.
Save the neck for me, Clark.
Tough season guys, this was such a waste
Honestly, I would fire Kevin Gilbride. Too much passing in this game cost them. The defense did what they could and the offense sucked.
PLAYOFFS?!
I don't consider it a waste.
I’ve had a great ride with the G-men for the past year. It had to end sometime, I guess, I just wish it wasn’t today. Had we won today and then gagged against the Cardinals next week I’d probably feel even worse.
Save the neck for me, Clark.
And while I'm in bitter rant mode
I’d also like to say “fuck the NFL” for its awful playoff format and seeding system…the system that has thus far given home field advantage to the wrong teams consistently, has allowed teams in the playoffs that have no business there, and forced #1 seeds to play teams they have absolutely not business having to face.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jan 11, 2009 4:11 PM EST reply actions
There's nothing to agree with
this is straight logic.
We played Philly because of a zip code instead of a record. San Diego made the playoffs because of a zip code instead of a record. Indy had to play a team on the road that they were 4 games better than because of a Zip Code. Atlanta had to go on the road against a team two games worse because of a zip code. The #1 seed in both conferences played harder opponents with better records because of zip codes.
I come from this little place called logic…and while living here, I’ve determined that a team with a better fucking record deserves more than a team with a worse fucking record…not for that team to be cheated because their taxpaying fan base happens to reside in a location further located east or west or north or south. It’s called bullshit. I tried explaining why the NFL does the playoff system that they do to my non-football watching girlfriend, and she couldn’t understand for the life of her why the system would be so dumb…and I told her I don’t know either.

It's that attitude I dislike so much
when the fix is so simple, so logical, and so quick, why isn’t it done? When people just sit back and say “that’s jut the way it is, man,” that’s the whole reason it STAYS the way it is, rather than changing. This system isn’t perfect, and neither is any real alternative, but it SURE THE HELL would make a huge improvement over what we have right now.

Eli's next spiral will be his first
and this game was lost the instant Plax shot himself in the leg. He was eli’s security blanket, without Plax, manning is nothing special.
I don't think its the strength...
As he showed in several plays, Eli can bomb the ball. The problem was his accuracy with what should have easily been four interceptions by the eagle. The only reason there were only two INTs is because the eagles defense had hands of stones when it came to unexpected balls.
The Lions?

This has been the weirdest postseason ever.
If the Steeler’s lose today, all four teams with a first round bye would have lost. I think now you have to go for the Cards, a team that’s never even sniffed the Super Bowl.
Although the Giants won today, I still give them props for a great season as a marked team. It’s tough these days to repeat and the Giants handled the pressure admirably for most of the year. The Giants, while I don’t like ‘em, are a class organization. Can’t say the same about the Eagles.
Go Cardinals!!!!
Funny that any fan thinks they can speculate about what is and isn’t a “class organization”, especially one whose team is the definition of a classless, back-stabbing, finger-pointing bunch of cowards.
Enjoy your offseason in classy Dallas.

Of course I'll be checking in here from time to time.
We’ll have a lot to discuss this off-season, the WR situation, Jacobs’ and Ward’s impending free agency, Spags, possible FA pickups, the draft. Fortunately, we have a team that’s pretty solid in most areas, and we’re talking about a few tweaks here and there rather than a complete overhaul.
You said it yourself a while back. This season must be considered a success even without a second straight title.
Still, I would have liked to continue my daily BBV ritual another three weeks
weirdest statistic ever?
i can’t believe that.
what offsets Westbrook’s lack of production was the fact that they were 5,567 of 5.568 (99.9%) on third-down conversions.

Carney
Was the second kick blocked, or did Carney’s age finally catch up with him? It looked blocked but I’m not sure. Still, 2 of his three missed kicks were in the same playoff game? Embarrassing…
Not blocked
He just didn’t have the leg to make that kick into the wind. Tynes should have been out there. His lack of leg strength finally hurt the Giants.

I wish New York basketball didn’t die this decade…The Knicks suck, St. John’s sucks, and even NY High School basketball is way down. There’s only 1 NY team in the Top 100 nationally…usually there’s like 5 or 6 at least.

I don't know if I agree with that
part of me feels like if he wins in Cleveland, he’ll say “ok, now it’s time to prove how great I am, by leaving the champs and going to a terrible franchise and single-handedly turning them around.” Of course, that could just be wishful thinking on my part.
And besides, if not Lebron, Dwyane Wade is a nice consolation prize
Baseball/football
It’s funny, earlier this year Ed wondered whether if our two cities had the chance to swap your NFL title for our MLB title… we just might have done it.
Osi
Osi’s injury finally came back to haunt us. You just can’t lose two big gun’s like Strahan and Osi and still expect the same results. The decrease in sacks was evident and it also screwed up our rotation.
Ernie Acorsi was right you can’t have too many pass rushers.
I don’t care what anyone says I think Kevin Gilbride’s playcalling in the first half killed us in the end. They ran the ball well until they got in the red zone and then they just abondoned the run. And throwing the ball with our backs to the endzone into the wind was stupid.
two key moments
3rd and 20 on the PHI 20 – Giants just got 3 off of Big Fred’s INT, had McNabb sacked but let him loose and the Eagles end up with 3 on the drive.
1st and 5 on the PHI 23 – Giants draw Eagles off-sides then call three consecutive passing plays resulting in a net total of zero yards and have to settle for 3.
that 3rd and 20 conversion was a huge momentum swing.

The throw by Eli
that turned into a pick and led to the Eagles first score was maybe the stupidest play call of the season. That was Jacobs time right there.

I’m a Cowboys fan just so we have full disclosure. You guys had a great team and a great year…I wish my team would have played as well as yours did this season. Tough end for season
Being an Eagles fan I can say the Eagles have exceeded my expectations this season and I sure most Giants fans are disappointed by not going further in the playoffs. But I got to say the Giants were the best team in the NFC for most of the season. And I truly enjoy reading the insightful posts on this board the past week. Better luck next season.
Things I learned
1. Gilbride still has some work to do on play calling. Some of the choices today did not give Eli, the WRs and The RBs the best chance to make a play.
2. A talented WR does not equate a #1 WR. Although I was ready to chuck Burress under the bus, I think I underestimated his impact on this offense. At times a lackadaisical route runner, sometimes dropped easy passes, but the mentality of a #1 WR and the ability to make that big play is what separates a talented WR from a number 1 WR. I would have like to have seen some plays to Moss today, but that is just because he did not get anything and he is perfect for some short, quick slant routes.
3. This defense is still great. The DBs are awesome, The interior and exterior linemen and good if not great even with only recording one sack (?) today.. If we can continue to draft great pass rushers and get some depth at LB, it will continue to stay great.
4. The redzone and 4th and inches need some work. They had been great on 3rd down this year or at least it feels that way with Smith emerging and I can not remember having a 4th and inches problem, but settling for FGs and getting blasted twice on 4th and inches can’t be allowed. Something needs to be done to be more effective in these situations.
5. I do not think any thing drastic needs to be done with this team. I would not be surprised to see Gilbride gone and they do need a #1 WR if Burress is done. i do not think a Kiwanuka for Calvin Johnson is a god trade for either team. He can solve some of the Giants LB depth next yr with Osi back. He is very versatile and guys like that are extremely valuable.
Thanks for all the fun conversations this year. I wish it had ended on a better note, but we got beat by a better team today. Trust me, I hate saying that since the Cowboys are the only team I despise more than the Eagles.
Ed and Jrs, great blog. I will be back on draft week and to see what everyone else thought the problem was today.
Thanks.

#4
It’s usually the case that two opposing fans will see the same play differently. One guy thinks his team didn’t make a play, while the other sees it that his team did make a play.
So with that in mind I’d invite you to consider that your 4th & 1 problem was that you were facing the #3 run defense in football. This was a great rushing team against a great run stopping team. Something had to give.
I think if there’s one matchup to look at on those two plays it was Bunkley vs O’Hara. Bunkley won that battle both times.
I'll agree
that Bunkley beat O’Hara. But we averaged 4.3 yards per carry, so it’s not like your vaunted run defense shut us down. Those were, IMO, bad play calls (at least the Eli sneak was…the Jacobs one was just a bad read on Jacobs’ part, if he’d cut left he gains 5 yards). Our run game was doing just fine against you guys – the problem was our coaches didn’t stick with it. I’m sure that’s a problem you’re sympathetic to.
#3 rushing DEF
Jason, you guys have a great Def. I have no problem admitting that. They forced our offense into mistakes by making plays. However, given our success in this game rushing and the fact that we have one of the best Offensive lines in football (Eli had as much time as he wanted in the pocket today even on all out blitzes), I believe we should always make 4th and 6 inches.
The 4th and 2 play. Know I said get it t Jacobs all game long, and as cj said, the lane was seemingly there, he just went the wrong way. I don’t know if he would have made it; it seemed clear and I am certain less pissed at missing the 4th and 2 than the 4th and 6 inches.
All in all, the Giants settles all season long for too many FGs. I think the evidence is clear given Carney’s successful year though rarely ever used for a kick over 45 yds. It was not just a statement for this game, but in general.

we won
In an ironic twist the NFL merged with the PGA to form PFGL – Pro Footgolf League. Rules are you play a game of football and the team w/ the lowest score wins…so Giants win!!!!
