Phil Simms Quote

A few years ago, I was watching Phil talked, and he said that the real difference between quarterbacks that win games and those that don't boils down to 2  or three plays per game.

I'm paraphrasing here, but Phil's point was that there were two to three plays in every game where everything breaks down.  And on those plays, the quarterback has to make something positive happen, essentially it is all up to the QB.

As much as I liked Kerry Collens, I never felt he had that.  If everything was going well, he had good protection, and the running game was working, Collins could pick a team apart.   But, when things started falling apart around him, Kerry fell apart too.

What we are starting to see with Eli is those one or two plays per game that, potentially, could set him apart as an elite qb.

Comes time watching McNabb take that sack at the end of the game

McNabb taking that sack at the end of the game seemed the sort of thing Simms meant.

I actually think that was a case

of McNabb trying to do TOO much. I’m no McNabb fan, but you can’t say he’s not the type of QB who can make things happen after a play breaks down. Look no further than the 4th and 26 play in the NFC Championship game the year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.

sorry

got my years mixed up: that was in the Divisional Round, not the NFC Championship, and it was the year the Panthers went to the Super Bowl, but the point still stands

But you don't need to be a scrambler

Probably the all time best at making something from nothing was Tark. – Which just shows that you need to have a team around you.

I think it is more a matter of composure, the ability to “see what is there” and take advantage of it. QBs don’t win a game on their own – but those one or two plays can make a big difference

Phil's insight makes sense, although I've never heard it before.

Unlike you, outside of the SB pass to Tyree, I can’t recall Eli making those kind of 2-3 plays per game recently. I trust your observation that he has and find that encouraging. I’ll be looking for them in the future.

I hadn't

But the Tyree pass, and the left handed pass in this last game are indications that he is growing into that direction,
