New York Giants' notebook, 09.16.08
New York Giants' coach Tom Coughlin was reportedly a little testy when asked about Ahmad Bradshaw on Monday.
"Everyone made a real big deal about last week. There are reasons for everything, not all are shared. The opportunity came this week, he obviously did a great job in that situation, he was a very nice momentum change for us, and he was ready. I knew he was ready. As I told you yesterday after the game he warmed up well, he really worked well with his return game, and I thought that he certainly was ready to go and he was focused and ready to go. It was all positive."
Makes you wonder what has really been going on with Bradshaw. Reality is, I'm not sure I care as long as he is making plays and the Giants are winning.
BIG BLUE VIEW GROWS AGAIN: Regular BBV readers are familiar with 'Greek' and his weekly picks. Well, 'Greek' will be appearing more regularly here from now on, as he has joined Big Blue View as a co-writer. 'Greek' will continue to do weekly picks, and will handle a Monday roundup of NFL games. He's a football junkie who watches all the games on Sunday, and he knows his stuff. I am sure you will enjoy his insights.
Here is a new feature I would like to drop in once a week. Giants' season stats.

Some eye-opening stats, Ed
The Clark, Kehl and Wynn #s say a lot about Jr’s talent evaluation skills (and TC’s as well, since Clark and Wynn played for him before.) Does the solo # include the sack #?
Ross is all over the place. Butler and Johnson #s justify their playing time. Both can hit whatever their weaknesses in coverage might be.

Indeed
Clark has been a revelation. Kehl is going to be terrific, and Wynn has been solid. Reese missed on a couple of picks this year (Robert Henderson especially), but he can evaluate talent as well as anybody.

Ross
This guy is becoming a big time CB. I’m getting giddy about his talent.

Eli
The 93.0 QB rating is also nice. Very early, but a good sign of maturity.

Is there a way?
Is there anyway to sort the data by leaders instead of by name?
It’d be interesting to see the leaders from top to bottom.

I don't think so
I will look through some of the data options I have with other stat reports and see what I have.

Some other stats ...
Eli is over 60%. It’s only 2 games, but its still a very good sign.
Look at the yards/rush of “Earth, Wind, and Fire” … 10.4, 5.8, 5.7 … that’s just sick.
One thing I would like to see some more of soon … takeaways. There’s no fumble recovery column, but I’m pretty sure the Gmen haven’t had any. And only 1 INT. Hopefully the D starts getting some more.

Running game
Looking at those numbers I know there is a lot of desire to see more Bradshaw. It’s awfully hard to say Ward deserves fewer carries, though.

I think
Someone said that TC will go with whoever is having the better day. I foresee alot of Jacobs in the first half and then either Ward or Bradshaw once the D-line/LB’s are worn out from tackling him 15-20 times.
I think they both offer a dynamic shift and will both see a lot more touches.
I am not sure if this is a point of concern or not but the secondary are the leading tacklers, i’ve never studied defensive numbers to know if that is the norm or not. I’m guessing not, since any reception they would be the chief tackler. It would only be a problem if the ratio went way askew, meaning RB’s were getting to them on a consistent basis?
Is my logic on that correct?

Interesting
I think one thing to remember, though, is that the Giants are generally ahead. That means more passing, and more tackles for corners and safeties.

True
I guess if they were down alot, meaning being rushed on more frequently. The secondary being the leading tacklers would be a really bad thing.

don't forget about our blitzing schemes
if Spags sends people from the line at the QB someone in the secondary has to step up to fill the void

Secondary
it wasn’t that long ago we had a bunch of guys in the secondary (like Will Demps) who missed as many tackles as they made. Now, Ross, Kenny Phillips, Butler, Webster and some of these other guys are bringing guys down regularly in the open field. That makes a huge difference.

LBs
I do agree that our secondary is making plays and that the blitzing schemes have a lot to do with their numbers, but I would like to see these numbers start evening out. Our LBs seem to be making plays, but I would think that they’d have more tackles than they do. I think this needs to be probed further (i.e. – watch game tape) or just more time for the numbers to even out. Usually your MLB is one of the leading tacklers, but Pierce has half the tackles of Ross right now. There is something not right about that.

Thanks for the stats....
This is a good feature, ED. A lot can be gleaned about how our team is progressing by keeping an eye on the stats. Bad or good trends can be identified by studying these numbers.
