Wednesday Walk Around the NFL 9-10-08
Happy Wednesday, Giants fans, it's time again for a look around the league at some of the stories making headlines around the NFL:
- Shawn Merriman of the San Diego Chargers has decided to have season-ending surgery on his knee. The San Diego Union-Tribune has run a simulation that projects the impact of Merriman's loss on the Chargers.
- In a follow-up on the Merriman story, Mike Klis of the Denver Post talks about how Playing hurt earns badge of honor in NFL.
- Rick Telander from the Chicago Sun-Times says rule changes should be made to protect vulnerable QB's.
- All Headline News has its "Top Ten Power Rankings" for Week 2, and it's nice to see 3 NFC teams up there.
- The Titans had to call police to help find QB Vince Young
- Gregg Doyel from CBS Sportsline.com suggests that Tom Brady being hurt makes the Pats less hateable.
- Finally, make sure to check back later today as I will have a special story on some of the fallout from Tom Brady's injury.

The Giants at # 2 certainly shows respect, which they might be better off without.
As for rating Dallas #1, who can argue with that, considering all the talent they have?
Merriman had no chance of playing a whole season with the injuries he had. For toughness, though, his effort puts him right up there with Jack Youngblood who played with a broken leg, and Monk Edwards an old-time Giant who played with two broken kneecaps (or so the story goes from some older old-timers than I.).

Is this the same Monk Edwards
who with these same 2 broken knee caps, walked 9 miles each way during a blinding snowstorm to return a borrowed Bible from the “Queen for a day” shelter?
We're only gonna score 17 points?

That's the guy. all right,
and he did it after playing the same day both ways all the way against the Monsters of the Midway at Soldiers Field. They just don’t make ’em like that any more (or even then, for that matter.)

The Rick Telander article is ridiculous
I’m sorry, but there’s already a ton of rules in place to protect QB’s. Watch film of games from the 60’s and 70’s…QB’s got MAULED, frequently long after they threw the ball. What does he want them to do, play with red jerseys on where they can’t get hit at all?
Injuries to star players suck, but if you look at the frequency, running backs and linebackers get hurt way more often than QB’s. And his comparison to race car drivers Savage and Earnhardt is disingenuous at best, dangerous at worst: both of them died due to lax safety standards. The worst that’s ever happened to a QB was a shattered leg and an ended career, and that happened on a fairly routine sack (I’m talking about LT and Theisman of course). I think there’s already too many rules protecting QB’s. Remember the Titans game 2 years ago, when Kiwanuka got called for a ridiculous roughing the passer, so the next time he wrapped up Vince Young, he was afraid of the penalty and let him go too soon, only for Young to run for the first down. I would have preferred if Kiwi could have driven him to the turf, hard, and not have to worry about a tick-tack penalty. This is football!

I agree with you, I think the QB’s are protected enough.
