Pennington to the Giants?

So, Brett Favre is a New York Jet and the Jets will reportedly release veteran quarterback Chad Pennington.

So, obvious question Giants' fans. How about Pennington as your backup for Eli Manning?

I doubt it will happen, because Pennington will likely have options in places where he would more opportunity to play. But, I think it's a great idea.

He sure would be a more reliable option than Anthony Wright or David Carr.

Your thoughts?

Pennington would be

an interesting signing, but I would be shocked if it happened. I would bet he goes to a team like the Bears where he would be the best QB on the team. Also, thank God this mess is over…I was getting sooooo sick of hearing about Favre.

Pennington

has the arm-strength of a 12-year old girl. I’ll pass.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Aug 7, 2008 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

I understand

his lack of arm strength and his limitations. But we are comparing him to Anthony Wright and David Carr, we aren’t comparing him to John Elway.

touche

i’d take him on the cheap over Wright, but I still think it’s worth giving Carr a shot – even if everyone says he looks like crap in Camp.

Pennington

I honestly think his arm strength is a little maligned. He can throw the deep ball when necessary. No, he can’t drop back and wail it like Elway or Randall Cunningham, who for my money had one of the strongest arms God ever put on a man, but I think as a backup to Eli he would be a definite upgrade. Plus, its another way to stick it to the Jets, which is always a nice bonus

At this point, he may be signable for a 1 year deal on the cheap, I’d take him

Agreed

He’s a great upgrade over Carr and Wright….

But I think he goes somewhere that he can compete for the starting position. I see him going to Minnesota or Chicago; places where the starting QB is VERY shaky.

it's unfortunate

Other then his arm strength I think he’s a great QB. Keep in mind his best days were in an West-Coast. That’s the real problem, with everything staying short, CB’s started jumping on everything. I think in the right system he could succeed. On the other hand, as Flutie proved, some guys have weaknesses that absolute deal breakers when teams have 6 days to prepare for them.

if you put

Favre’s arm on Pennington’s brain, you’d have the best QB ever.

by cjmulrain on Aug 7, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Pennington

would be the ideal back up if he would accept the role. He might not have Jeff Georges’ arm but he is a savvy veteran who could toss the alley oop to our corps of 6 1/2 footers , probably without running for his life at the first sound of a footstep.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

Another point

I think Pennington is scheduled to make around $6M this season. That’s a hefty price tag for a #2 QB.

Given Reese’s firm emphasis on keeping the team’s salary structure from spiraling out of control, I’m guessing he sticks with one of the much cheaper options of Wright or Carr.

right

Of course that’s why I’m not even voting, clearly the Bears or Vikes are going to offer more then it would be worth to us. Tampa Bay, also a good fit for him. Basically everyone who didn’t get Favre. The Bears would be awesome, then they can have the Sex Cannon and the Noodle Arm

OMG

That Grossman thing is quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever read. I literally spit my drink out.

well in that case here's the most recent one

I’m not a huge KSK fan, but the Grossman stuff cracks me up every time. Especially because it perfectly fit the Penn State QB last year too.

I probably should have said last time this is NSFW.

Breaking news

Favre unretired, says he couldn’t possibly play for the Jets after the way they’ve disrespected him, Jets have traded him to Oakland for a 5th round pick

If only it were true

I’m so sick of the Farve thing and now he’s practicing in my back yard…..........Ugh

I'm as sick of the Favre melodrama as anyone

but in terms of actual football, I am very intrigued by how he’s gonna do. I’m glad this whole mess is resolved, and now I want to see him go out and play some football and see which side was right in this fiasco (I have been on the Packers side the whole time, so we’ll see how it turns out).

Should giants persue pennington?

They should do exactly what they are doing. Look into it, and be open to it IF his price comes way down.
