Tom Coughlin says Kiwi going back to the line

Tom Coughlin has just announced that Mathias Kiwanuka is moving back to defensive end, to replace the injured Osi Umenyiora.

As far as Michael Strahan goes, here is what Coach Coughlin had to say:

"There hasn't been any discussion that I've been involved in" about bringing him back. However, he also said "We're going to explore every option."

Here is the story from the Daily News

Great move...

…One that had to be done. Maybe a veteran LB gets cut from another team this week or next to further supplement the LB corps.

I like this move though. This is the right move and one that just had to be done.

to me this seems like a much much much more viable idea than paying 8-10 million to bring a guy back who likely wouldnt be in game shape till after the bye week. just saying…yes he was great but without Osi on the other side how great would he STILL be?

Strayhan was a star

for many years before Osi ever arrived…..

strahan

stay was double and triple teamed almost his whole career and still produced. To me that’s his greatest testament. I make the the argument to my friends that he is still underrated by most fans

Good attitude Mathias

He said earlier this summer he could switch back at any time, nows the time. Lets hope Kehls’ the real deal and Blackburn turns out to be all I think he can be. Clark should be fine. Gerris needs to step up in a hurry.
Ed, after reading your last couple of days worth of posts I sense your more bummed about this injury than anyone. While it’s impossible to replace Osi I don’t think the Giants will be as bad off as you think, and I’m not even considering a Strahan return at this point. If Wilkinson’s speed translates to occasional pass rushing success, it’ll be ok.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

I never said

I thought the Giants would be bad. My point is no matter what you do there has to be some dropoff.

blackburn

Where does he fit in? I was under the impression the only way he sees the field is if Pierce moves to WLB.

by queler on Aug 25, 2008 1:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

His rookie year

he played the “sam” position pretty well and hurt his neck right away after a good game. I think he can play all the positions, maybe not as well as Kiwi. We’ll probably find out soon enough though

by big blue wrecking crew on Aug 25, 2008 2:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

hmm

I could sworn I only saw him play MLB after Pierce went down.

by queler on Aug 25, 2008 2:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Blackburn

I just don’t know if he has the speed to play the outside spots. In some ways he reminds me of ex-Giant Nick Griesen.

.."don't think the Giants will be as bad of...," etc.

I agree 100%. Osi had one great game last year and had a damn good SB. The rest of the year he was a good, steady DE, period. Sure it’s tough to lose him, but it’s not a catastrophe. Losing Eli, now that would be a catastrophe and the dream, or expectation, or whatever of a repeat, or even making the playoffs would go up in smoke. The Giants will field a damn good team with the players they have.

King George

has spoken. And quite emphatically at that.

Kiwanuka

This is the best move — probably the only move the Giants could make. It will get all the best players they have on the field.

Dahl

Wow, buried in that article is the news that Dahl tore his other ACL and will be on the shelf for the year.

Kudos to Kiwi for putting the team first. He deserves a healthy round of applause when they announce his name in the starting lineups.

by Cody K on Aug 25, 2008 1:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Dahl

He wasn’t making the team, anyway.

by ETVal on Aug 25, 2008 1:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

jeez,

be more specific, i thought it was Diehl at first.

kiwi

I’m hoping all that LB will improve Kiwi’s run stopping, he was awful his rookie year. Maybe Tuck and Kiwi won’t demand double teams every play, but they’ll still be very good, despite not being dominant. We should also remember that we have a very good tackle rotation that will help a lot. I’m telling you keep an eye on Jay Alford, he’s a penetrater. I think he’ll reek some havoc on 3rd down.

ESPN Football Today

Reported that Strahan will come back for an 8 million dollar season. How much do we have left under the cap and will he even be in football shape?

by NYcON on Aug 25, 2008 5:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Strahan

Geez, it’s all just speculation. $8 million is the number being tossed around, but Strahan hasn’t said that. If the Giants actually thought Strahan would/could play Kiwanuka would not have been moved to DE so quickly.

by ETVal on Aug 25, 2008 8:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

just did some research

and apparently Reese has over 12 million in cap room to play with. Wilkinson has said that he is not yet 100 per cent with that knee of his. That sounds a little ominous to me. I say pay Big Mikey the 8 million, put him back in blue for the year and he doesn’t necessarily have to come in and start. Even if he takes a month to get back into playing shape. In his current condition he’s still better than anything the Giants will get from the waiver wire and he gives us an insurance policy in case anything should happen to an end OR a linebacker. Also, Plax ran an almost full practice today. (Bout damn time) and apparently he feels great. Just thought that should be mentioned and maybe brighten up a bit of this “doom n’ gloom” mentality. 4 million is still a lot of money left over to shore up any other holes that might pop up

by NYcON on Aug 25, 2008 6:20 PM EDT   0 recs

latest report had Stra asking for the full $12m

Maybe he gives us the hometown discount…..but uhhh this is troubling and not the message I would have liked seeing:

Strahan’s friends said Monday that his interest in talking about a possible contract is genuine, but that he may seek as much as $12 million for this season

by Cody K on Aug 25, 2008 7:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Apologies

I didn’t report that 100% correctly; note that Strahan himself hasn’t requested the $12m – it was according to his friends.

Suffice to say, he will command some serious cheddar.

by Cody K on Aug 25, 2008 7:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pay the man

get him in camp and get him acclimated; he’s got until 11/2, the first 8 games have one division and 3 away games; after that the hammer comes down when Dallas comes to town, then its gets really difficult. the 2cd half of the season is make or break.

Sunday, 11/2 4:15 PM ET Dallas
Sunday, 11/9 8:15 PM ET @ Philadelphia
Sunday, 11/16 1:00 PM ET* Baltimore
Sunday, 11/23 4:15 PM ET* @ Arizona
Sunday, 11/30 1:00 PM ET* @ Washington
Sunday, 12/7 1:00 PM ET* Philadelphia
Sunday, 12/14 8:15 PM ET* @ Dallas
Sunday, 12/21 1:00 PM ET* Carolina
Sunday, 12/28 1:00 PM ET* @Minnesota

Update; up to 9mil anyway, gotta save for a rainy day

by The Pale Scot on Aug 25, 2008 7:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I keep saying

Remember that Strahan walked away. He’s not in football shape with his body or his mind. This is all largely speculation, and until the Giants admit making an offer I’m not buying into any of it.

by ETVal on Aug 25, 2008 8:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

cap

That cap room could be used to pay plan and osi too

Just a thought

Yes, losing Osi is bad, but there may be some good coming out of it in the long run. When Kewanuka was moved to LB, it was because the Giants wanted to get him on the field more. With Osi and Strahan, that would have been hard to do. Plus the LB corps was weak, so it sounded like a good idea. If he hadn’t been injured, he would have seen more playing time than he would have as a replacement. Furthermore, after he retired, I seem to recall that Michael Strahan said that Kewanuka was a natural DE, perhaps even more talented than himself, and should be moved back to the line. But the Giants already spent considerable effort making him into a LB, perhaps dreaming of the second incarnation of LT. Even when Strahan retired, that logic held because of the emergence of Tuck. But now with Osi gone, moving Kewanuka back to the line will give him more playing time – and – they now have a better LB corps to fill in the holes. So, I think Strahan will keep talking for Fox and overall, the Giants are comfortable going without him.

I predict that the Giants will have one of the most dominating defenses in in the NFL this year even without Osi.

you are right.

This is exactly

what I’m thinking.

by potroast on Aug 26, 2008 8:19 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pretend for a moment

you’re Jerry Reese. You have 12 mil you can spend yet this season. Would you pay 8 million of that to a guy who’s 36 years old and has been wounded 2 out of the past 3 years? He is already commited to the “retired mindset” and would be coming out for the love of money not as much as a commitment to get back to the SB. I would stand pat ,keep checking the waiver wire and see what happens. With Kiwi at end we need linebackers …………fast.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

by big blue wrecking crew on Aug 26, 2008 6:32 AM EDT   0 recs

Kewanuka....

We don’t have enough good linebackers to move him back to end. Even if we can’t make a deal for Strayhan, which I speculate is very likely, we are still better off leaving Kewanuka where he is. IMHO….

by giant fan since 57 on Aug 26, 2008 6:32 AM EDT   0 recs

Strayhan...

at 80% is still better than anything else we can muster at this time. All those years of experience sould serve him well. Even if he couldn’t play a whole game it would be worth having him. Moving Kewanuka creates two problems rather than the one.
