Osi Umenyiora done for the year
Wanted to make a FanPost on this, but it seems the defending champion NY Giants just lost their best pass rusher for the season.
New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee Tuesday.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.
"It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear," coach Tom Coughlin said. "But after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren's thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go."
It also looks like Shawne Merriman's knee injury is much worse than initially thought. He has two tendon tears, and the injury is potentially career threatening. He is likely done for 2008 as well. DE Jason Taylor was also hurt last night, and will be out for two weeks.
I root for the Giants as well as the Colts, and I'm sick to my stomach with Osi gone.

God I hate preseason
The only thing that ever happens is players you like either get hurt or cut or both.
They should switch to a 18 game season with no preseason games and allow teams to start with 80 players and cut 10 every two weeks for 6 weeks.

Ugh!!
This is the worst-case scenario. No. 92 iS NOT coming through the door, and the Giants chances to repeat just went up in smoke. I will have much, much more on this Monday. Thanks to BigBlueShoe for posting this while I spent the day sunning (I mean frying myself to a crisp) at the beach and the golf course.

Up in smoke?
Wow! No doubt he;s a key player, still…I’ll have to see your reasoning.

George
Read my thoughts Monday. I am not saying the Giants can’t be good, just that they can’t be Super Bowl caliber.

Were they Super Bowl caliber last year?

Well
We didn’t think so much of the year, but obviously they were. I’m not raising the white flag, just saying you might need to define a good season a little differently.

Injuries
So, which one of those players was as important as Osi? I am hardly giving up on the season, I just think this team has now lost the defensive element that made it special.

Strahan
Even if he can, I don’t know how much he can do. He obviously hasn’t been working out like a player, and there is no way his heart will be in it 100 percent.

well
while all that may be true, its a call Jerry has to make
But I think Strahan would find the idea of riding in on a white horse and saving the day very tempting

No way Strahan comes back.
Forget that. It’s a no-win situation for him and he’s clearly made the mental adjustment to retirement already.
As for the team – we did it with a lot of heart and unknown players last year, and we’ll just have to do it again.
To be perfectly honest about it, even with our relatively young team and confidence coming in off of last year, I’ve been hoping for a fun season but not necessarily a Super Bowl repeat. That would be a bit much to ask even with Osi. AND Strahan.
A decent year of improvement from last year’s regular season is still possible, and some playoff magic would be a fun topper as it was last year. Even if they don’t repeat though I’m not going to be devastated. Maybe I’m just still riding the wave of improbability from last year.

Agreed
There will still be a lot of things to look forward to, and hopefully feel good about.

triumph over adversity
is a theme the Giants are more than familiar with. I really wish Osi didn’t get hurt, he is an extremely important part of the team… But he isn’t the whole team. The Giants won the superbowl because of their ability to play as a team and there are still plenty of talented Giants on the active roster. I’m not willing to give up on the season just yet. GO BLUE!

also a little more over at the HSS website. As Dr. Warren is the team doc this is where Osi will probably go for surgery.
