Giants lose to Jets, but Osi's knee is the story
I only saw a little of Saturday's 10-7 exhibition loss to the Jets, but I saw enough to make me sick to my stomach.
I saw Osi Umenyiora, at left, being carted off the field with a knee injury.
There is no way of knowing how bad this injury is until Umenyiora has an MRI. At least the Giants don't believe there is structural damage.
Hold your breath Giants fans. Oh, and say a prayer or two if you are so inclined.
Anyway, since I didn't see more than a few plays it isn't really fair for me to put up a 'Kudos & Wet Willies' review.
Instead, it's an open thread for today.
Drop a comment with your own 'Kudos & Wet Willies,' discuss Osi's injury, Josh Huston's missed field goal, or anything else you would like to chat about.
Oh, and did I mention praying to the God of healthy knees for good news on Osi?

wat i was thinking during the game.........
1) we cant afford osi being injured. so far the xrays are negative but that doesnt rule out soft tissue damage, we just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best bc we need him more than ever with strahan gone…
2) david carr is terrible. i have no faith in him at all, he cant move at all in the pocket, takes way too long to release, and tripped over himself when handing off to ahmad bradshaw before his TD. the giants need to cut him ASAP, we need the roster space.
3) andre woodson looked great connecting with mario manningham a few times, the pick to end to the game didnt concern me too much bc with some time and practice it looks like we could have a solid backup behind eli in a year or two.
4) josh huston isnt the answer. bring back jay feely.
5) dockery got beat downfield twice, once for a TD that got reversed bc bubba franks drew an illegal formation penalty…….. not good for dockery’s roster prospects.
6) gerris wilkinson made a bunch of nice tackles tonight, as did kenny philips who looks like he just wants blood
that said, its too bad the game against the pats is in the last week of the preseason bc id love to see an actual rematch against the pats instead of just a glorified practice with the second and third-stringers.
did anybody else get the impression throughout the game that the focus was on the jets and brett favre? what th ehell is going on, theyre the friggin JETS and we just won the superbowl!! what is it about brett favre that makes the media fawn over him so much? no mention of how brett favre’s “last” pass in the NFL was to corey webster, btw..

Good points
The thing with Carr is on those plays where he held on forever we couldn’t see the whole field in the shot. It seemed both he on the field and the coaches on the sideline were telling the recievers to come back to the passer in those situations. On the handoff ,at least he got it to the RB before he felll down. I didn’t want the guy to begin with but he seems to be an intriging back up project.
We need a Kicker! Hixon is making a serious push for playing time.
It was a Jets broadcast so I kind of understand where the anouncers were coming from. We should be grateful that Eagle and Buttle are not our regular broacast booth personel, never thought any one would make Buck and Aikman look good . They managed it just fine.

Jets focus
It was the Jets broadcast crew if I’m not mistaken, so that was to be expected.

Thoughts
1. Get used to Carr. He is going to beat out Anthony Wright.
2. Huston won’t make this team. Hello Jay Feely!
3. Kevin Dockery is awful.

Manningham
I saw from the stats that he caught three balls. How did he look?

Manningham
Great hands! Fast as lightning in a strait line. Couldn’t see much else.

Thanks to those of you with comments
The game wasn’t televised where i live. ESPN showed tennis instead. How did Eli look.
He’s the player I focus on most, looking for two things (maybe ther’er the same:
1. Consistency
2. Accuracy (Tittle’s woud be nice, but I’ll settle for a whole lot less.)
Osi’s injury sucks but it doesn’t look too bad.

He didn't look bad at all
No grounders, no really dumb moves. Threw good balls. Hixon as you mentioned before and I didn’t think so at the time now looks like he could be a starter if need be. I wouldn’t be nervous at all about him. I wish ESPN classics would run some of the old football like they do boxing on Saturdays so I could see Tittle. I finally got to see Joe Louis!…………..Ali before the suspension was better!!!!!!!!!!! Tyson before King, drugs and Williams got to him better still!

Thanks for the heartening report re Eli
I’m hoping he can carry his performance in the tail end of last year into and through the 08 season.
As for Louis vs. Ali and Tyson, I disagree totally re Tyson. As Holly field said, he has no heart (hard to say about anyone willing to climb into the ring.) If you had enough to stand up to him, he would quit, as he did with Douglas and Holly field. Louis at the very least had enough to stand up to him.
As for Ali vs. Louis, I see it as a toss-up, with lot of questions.
Could Joe’s shuffle bring him close enough to wreak havoc with his short, devastating shots? Joe’s best punches traveled no more than 6-8 inches and his hands were much faster than Ali’s. Then again, Ali had much faster feet and was a lot bigger. Could he stay away and tie Joe up when he got close, wearing him down by draping his body all over him as was his wont (something the ref’s never called him on?)
How about Ali’s fantastic recuperative powers? If Joe, could get close enough to launch some of his deadly flurries, would they be enough to take Ali out? Joe’ best weight was under two hundred. Can a man that size possbly have a punch big enough to take out a much bigger man like Ali? Anyone Joe’s size today is a cruiserweight. All heavyweights seem to start at two-twenty.
As for YA, his reputation was that he was the most accurate thrower of any kind of ball in his time. He had a good arm as well. I believe Eli’s inaccuracy has been his biggest problem, even bigger than his occasional dumb moves.

Fair enough about Louis
In just wanted to hear what you had to say. I watched about 6 hrs of him last week (first time I ever saw him). I think a lot of the great heavywieghts back then were a bit lighter. Marciano was under 200 I think too. Fun to think “what if”. I hope you can see some of the old Tyson fights sometime. I hadn’t remembered them as clearly being they were 20 years ago (how do you remember Tittle?) When he was a young kid he was totaly humble and had a great attitude when responding to the journalsists and all. Really came across as the "all american boy " type. Only later after Cus D’amato died and he dumped Rooney did his head swell and I think all the outside influences and partying did him in. Hard to think I’m standing up for the current tattoo faced scumbag rapist etc but, he really seemed a great kid way back when. Too bad.

Hollyfield remembered tyson from the days they were both amateurs.
That was when he pegged him as a bully and a coward. I have to admit Tyson looked awesome in his early years. Then again, he was never in a real fight back then, except for “Blood” Green, who had guts but not much else, and Tyson knew it. Louis was amazing. You couldn’t even see some of his punches, only the reaction from the other fighters’ heads whipping to the side as if struck by a sledgehammer.

Yeah
I saw it on TV several times ,Louis’ speed and some of those pinches were faster than film it seemed , He really was amazing with that. Ali did that short blinding punch thing to knock out Liston I think . But never saw it when I was watching him at the time a couple of years later.I wish that I’d been able to see more.

I've often wondered why Ali didn't learn from that one punch ko of Liston.
He was never a big hitter because he threw mostly arm punches from a distance. He’d wear people down but couldn’t finish off some of the tougher guys. The refs often stopped his fights, thinking his opponenets had eaten enough leather. I remember Shavers standing patiently in a corner absorbing leahter, waiting for a chance to land a bomb when the ref stopped the fight. You’d have thought Ali would have tried shorter, jolting shots at least on occasion. He certainly didn’t like infighting. He’d clutch and hold instead.
by george cronin on Aug 24, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
From what I remember about the Shavers fight was that they stopped it early, same as with Lyle in Ireland. At the time I was heavily biased for Ali and didn’t care. Hind sight is 20/20. Anyone who could legitimately knock out Bonevena though is (was) still pretty darn good. Come to think of it a lot of heavywieght bouts throughout history have been stopped early benefiting the latest darling. You dont think that…………………aah never mind.

Everybody's up early
Nice. Another concern cropping up for me is David Diehl. He got beat for 2 sacks last night. I am really disappointed in Huston. I thought he beat out Tynes for the job last year, and I expected him to come in and do well. I wonder if he even makes it to the New England game

Diehl
I wouldn’t worry about him just yet. The Jests looked like they may have game planned just a bit and the Giants didn’t. Hustons kick offs were good but, we could use a better field goal guy than either he or Tynes.

I dunno
Lost in all the glory last year was that Diehl did give up a lot of sacks, and the Giants were sniffing for a replacement, or at least a fallback

better step up, assuming they move him back to end, which seems to be the best fit.

I don't think the giants will move Kiwi, at least not right away.
They’ve got the vet Wynn and two young guys who’ve lokked good, Tollefson and Gilberry. Anyone know anything about Morrow? He palyed for USC, so…
