Wednesday Walk Around The League 8-13
Good Morning! Opening Night is 22 days away, and here are some stories from around the league
As promised, the Wednesday Walk remains "Favre Free"
The Bleacher Report brings us Ten NFL Predictions You Can Take to the Bank. Trust me; number 9 is not going to make you happy.
MVN brings you the Top five winners of the NFL offseason
Also, MVN has a list of the NFL coaches who are on the Hot Seat. It's nice to look at one of these lists and not see the Giants head coach on there, since that has probably only happened 3 times in the last 10 years or so.
The Bills and Steelers are getting ready to play in Toronto tomorrow night, and I found an article in the Toronto Globe and Mail about the ridiculous ticket prices being charged for a meaningless game. Welcome to the NFL Toronto
In case you hadn't heard, Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band will perform at Super Bowl 43. This means two things:
- Those 15,000 people they put on the field every year to yell and scream for the halftime entertainment even though they have no idea who they are cheering for? This year they will have no idea who Bruce Springsteen is.
- Fittingly, a Jersey guy will be on stage performing at the Super Bowl while a Jersey team is in the locker room preparing for their repeat.
Oh and finally, here is a picture I found of our friend Reby Sky, looking as lovely as ever, and I must say, that is one cool looking pickup truck

Not just because of #9
but that whole Bleacher Report is pretty pathetic. I’ve never visited that site before, and this isn’t a ringing endorsement. Halfway through the season they won’t be able to delete that page fast enough.

Bleacher Report
I opened up that “report” twice and my browser crashed. I think that says it all.

exorbitant pricing in Toronto...
There are two things at play in the T-dot pricing scheme:
1) Toronto wants to prove it’s a superior market to Buffalo. Even the the Skydome, er, I mean “Megalomaniac” centre has way less seats than Ralph Wilson stadium, it can still generate as much revenue. Just imagine how much money you could make if you had a full size NFL stadium here Ralphie!
2) if you’ve been to a Toronto Make-Me-Laughs game over the last fifteen years you are either making more money than you should be, or you’re in somebody’s corporate seats. I live in Toronto and have only been to one game. (Thank you Molson’s!) My employer took his wife to a game last year. She had her jersey on and was really happy to be there, until she got shushed by a couple of suits who were brokering a business deal for cheering on the home team. When the Bills move here look for that trend to continue. Tax laws in Canada are such that companies can write off ridiculously over priced tickets here. This is the demographic that Godfrey and Co. Are after.
if you’d like to take your family to a pro sporting event, you can afford the Jays or the Rock (lacrosse). As for football, we have a minor league, farm team here called the Argos. They’re affordable too. For anyone who thinks the CFL is a pro league, I’d like to remind them that pro means professional, meaning you don’t have to work a second job to maintain a decent standard of living.

Interesting perspective NYcON
Thanks, and welcome! I see you just signed up last month, hopefully you will stick around. I honestly didn’t know CFLers have to supplement their income

P.S. That bleacher report
thing reminds me of those “get your story straight” ads that the NFL network runs every year. Last year’s was my favorite so far. “the closest Eli will ever come to a superbowl ring is when he gives Peyton a manicure”. The “Summer of Gloating” continues…

CFL salaries
Here’s an article I found on CFL salaries: www.verasburgershack.com/news/news5.html
I did notice that the address and the article both mention Vera’s burger shack, so there might be a conflict of interest, but you can cross reference that article with other articles that I’m too lazy to look up right now ;P
I used to work in a nightclub with a massive Korean guy named Jung. As it turned out he was an O-lineman with the Argos. He worked at the club to supplement his income. The minimum CFL salary is something gross like 35k… Canadian.

Interesting article
But you know what the upside of that is? CFL guys seem more prepared for life after football than NFL players do. They work harder, during the season and after, and don’t seem to get the sense of entitlement that most pro athletes do

Great point.
there doesn’t seem to be as many scandals coming out of the CFL on a yearly basis either. That said, I still feel that the NFL is a superior product. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend 2 games so far, last year against the Bills in Buffalo and Tiki’s 234 yarder against Washington the year before. (we clinched the playoffs both times…I’m thinking week 11 this year, just so the last few weeks aren’t such a nail-biter) the attendance was 96,000 in Washington and 76,000 in Buffalo. It’s an incredible experience that you just don’t get here with the CFL with the possible exception of the Grey Cup game.
I also tend bar at a sports bar here in Toronto, and NFL Sundays and Mondays are two of our busiest days of the week.
Yet the media here in Toronto barely reports on the NFL at all. I have to get my news from the Internet and one fantastic blog in particular ;) Should the Bills move to Toronto there is some fear it would kill the CFL. I think it would be beneficial to both leagues to institute a major/minor league system and have the CFL expand into the states again. With NFL Europa gone no one is filling that void and as for the inevitable rule changes, I’m sure some sort of compromise could be reached. It would also help remedy the CFL’s perrenial money troubles, as American fans would take an interest in the team affiliated with their NFL team

Mske rediculous - absurd off the wall predictions
Here is the thing with predictions – almost all of them are wrong anyway.
Hey Ed, when do we start predicting this year’s record? I’ll go for 19-0
So, if you make predictions and they are wrong, so? everyone’s prediction was wrong.
BUT – if you make a wild incredible prediction, and it turns out right, you can keep pointing to it, HEY. I was the only person who predicted Arizona would win it all this year!
As far as Giants being bottom of Div- A) Don’t see Philly being that much improved and B) Jim Zorn will be in his first year as head coach, ever. Even if he really has the talent to do it, even if you take the “snyder” factor out of the calculation – it takes a few years for anyone to learn the job. Most coaches do better the second time around. (someone should give Fassel another go)
