Ridiculous Rankings
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/news/story?id=3477622
For those of you who don't have insider access, it's a ranking of the 32 teams' run games. They rank the Giants 18, and here's their insight:
"Even though the Giants finished the 2007 season ranked fourth in run offense, that was based more on their commitment to run the football than their actual talent at the position. The best part about the Giants' run game is the physical play they get up front from the offensive line. The other solid aspect to the Giants' run game is depth at the position. Starter Brandon Jacobs is big, but not very physical. Derrick Ward saw extensive action before his injury and Ahmad Bradshaw adds a speed element. There is no premier player in New York, but the depth is good."
So basically, to paraphrase: "Even though the Giants had the 4th best rush attack in the regular season (and 3rd best Yards Per Carry) and rode that attack to the Super Bowl, they don't have any really famous backs or 1st round picks, so they suck."

That makes me wonder
How many sportswriters are in the Hall of Fame?

Jacobs
in fairness Brandon did slightly alter his style a bit last year. After the season opening knee injury he did try at times to avoid instant contact in an apparent attempt to find a hole that often wasn’t there for him. If you look back to most of the runs last year when he side stepped he didn’t gain the positive yardage he might have if he had plowed ahead for a couple. I’m not suggesting that he was gun shy due to injury , this was just the timing of it the injury happening so early. I remember hearing during last pre season that he had worked with Eddie George and that others were suggesting that he alter his style a bit to lengthen his career as this was to be his first as a starter. To me I’d rather see him blindly run over people taking off a few heads in the process.
We're only gonna score 17 points?

oh, and Terry
Marion Barber ran 204 times for 975 yards, averaging 4.5 YPC. In 475 career attempts, Barber is averaging 4.5 YPC
Brandon Jacobs ran 202 times for 1,009 yards, averaging 5.0 YPC. In 336 career attempts, Jacobs is averaging 4.6 YPC.
Ahmad Bradshaw ran 23 times and averaged 8.3 YPC in the NFL, and ran 48 times for 203 yards in the playoffs for a 4.3 YPC. Felix Jones was the backup running back on a 9-4 college football team.

it's not hard to average 8 yards a carry
when everyone and their mother on the opposing defense is locked in on Darren McFadden.

how can defenses be locked on McFadden
when he isn’t on the field?? Jones and McFadden were hardly ever on the field at the same time.
To average 8 yards per carry in the SEC, arguably the best conference in college football, is quite impressive.

Thank goodness
they don’t hand out Super Bowl rings based upon prognostication. I’d also like to ask Charles Woodson how physical a runner The Beast is. The Packer equipment manager is probably still trying to bang out the helmet dent from his pads.
