Don't forget to vote
Who will the second wide receiver on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team be?
The vote has turned into quite a competition between Plaxico Burress and Homer Jones. As I type, Plax leads by two votes, 34-32. If you haven't cast your vote, hurry up! The poll closes tonight.

I'm amazed
by the closeness of the vote. Homer is thrown in with 3 other old-timers, which provides a player on the current roster a distinct advantage (in terms of BBV demographics.). Match Jones and Plax head to head, and Jones runs away with it.

It is interesting
i do think the number of old-timers to choose from gives Plax an advantage. I think, though, that it seems those who don’t think Plax belongs have sort of galvanized around Jones. It is a really, really interesting vote.

In terms of talent? production? game changing catches?
I don’t think so.
Jones was fast, but that was it.
Look at his production
Year Catches TD
1964 4 0
1965 26 6
1966 48 8
1967 49 13
1968 45 7
1969 42 1
Those are OK numbers for a number 2 receiver, but number 1? He never had 50 catches in a season. Now, 13 TD on 49 catches is pretty impressive, but that is the only impressive number.
Look at Burress’s 3 years with the Giants
2005 76 7
2006 63 10
2007 70 12
Now, Jones played on some pretty crappy teams, but I still think that if you had Toomer,. Plax, and Jones all at their peak at the same time, Jones would be #3.

You mean that in a head-to-head vote
by BBVers between Homer and Plax, you think Plax would come out ahead?

it's important to remember the numbers in context though
You wouldn’t compare Ty Cobb to Adam Dunn and say Dunn’s a much better player because he’s hit a ton more homeruns. The game has changed; teams didn’t throw nearly as much in the 60’s as they do today.

for some reason
i don’t see Stephen Baker as an option on the poll.

This ought to open our eyes...
Think about it. In spite of the Giants great tradition we can barely scrape together the names of four or five receivers worthy of greatness.

Not one HOFer, 57,
although we had Don Maynard as a rookie. Letting him go was one of the all-time worst Giants’ blunders.

Whoops, one HOFer--the immortal Red Badgro.
Anyone out there old enough to remember him?

That was the amazing thing about the Parcells teams
They won without great receivers -

Thinking about WRs reminds me that the Giants have a
history of letting guys go who turned out to be better than the guys we kept, most recently Jurevicious and McCaffrey. With the fantastic depth we currently enjoy. it seems inevitable that at least two WRs on the current roster will be gone. By trade I hope, but not another guy who turns out to be a HOFer.

as penn state guy
I loved Jurevicious, but ultimately we couldn’t afford him and with his inability to stay healthy it was probably not worth it
