Just heard it on Sports Radio on the way home.....

He still has to pass the physical but apparently a done deal. I guess we are officially in the market for another tight end?

Another TE?

Maybe, but I get the impression that the Giants are satisfied with what they have at that position. Maybe some journeyman for depth?

by george cronin on Jul 21, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

Boss is a good player, Matthews is a good, young blocker and the Giants love Darcy Johnson, who was on IR last year.

Shock gets what he wants.

Does Rosenhaus know how to play the game, or what.? Depending on how much tread Shock has left on his tires, he should do well in NO. Payton will try to feature him, something the Giants wouldn’t do. NO gets what it wants. Reese settles for what NO wanted to give, which isn’t too bad, all things considered. He did better in trading Shock than Tuna did in trading Taylor. I wonder what draft picks Miami would have had if the three-way trade had been executed? It might have worked better for the Giants. Tuna wouldn’t be so petty as to turn it down for that reason, would he? Anyway, you can’t have too many DEs. Taylor would have helped immediately. On the other hand, Reese will have two more draft picks to play with in ‘09.

Wow!!!

Kudos to jrs for getting this out there quickly.

I was a little bummed

to hear about this. Then I looked at the last five 2nd round picks: Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss, Corey Webster, Chris Snee, and Osi Umenyiora. Apparently, the 2nd round is the money spot of the Giants.

by rzor on Jul 21, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

except for sinorice that is

these seems pretty fair over all. given shockey’s injury history they can save some money and perhaps get more productivity.

YOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn’t expect this to happen today! My wife initially called me and said it was two first round picks….............I almost had to change my pants.. Then the truth came ou as NFL live came on a few minutes ago….............RATS!!!!!!!! A second and a fifth…..oh well we’ll take it.
My pick for this season is that we’ll be hearing a lot more about Darcy Johnson this year. Yeah everyone’s high on Boss, and so am I but I’ll bet now that we see DJ catching a lot of people by surprise and a few balls in the end zone too.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

by big blue wrecking crew on Jul 21, 2008 4:22 PM EDT reply actions

I know

the Giants thought Johnson would be the backup last year, then he got hurt. We’ll see what happens.

Good Riddence

His act wore thin with me this offseason.

by DoctorK16 on Jul 21, 2008 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

boss and Johnson...take it to the bank!!

Shockey was and will be a cancer in anybody’s clubhouse…It was always me,me me!!
Workout with the team…not me!! Block for the team? I’ll do it begrudgingly!! Throw me the damn ball!!!!
We now are building a TEAM..and as we now know there is no Shockey in TEAM!!

Mini-Camp

It seems like the team waited to take a look at how mini-camp went.

Was Shockey going to continue to be a pain in the ass?; Shouting match with Reese. Check.

Are Boss and Johnson good enough to get it done? Check

Did we add some more offensive weapons in the draft i.e. big receivers? Manningham. Check.

Do we have any concerns about healing fully from a broken leg? maybe. check.

Seemed in my mind like reese and tom had a checklist and just said, “enough is enough.” w e have the replacements available.

I am sad to see the guy go, because I loved his heart on the field an the expectation that something big could happen when the ball was in his hands. But all the crap he brought with that potential was not worth it. Last years team, The Super Bowl Champions, reminded me it is about all the pieces not just the number of superstars you have. San Diego and Dallas are prime examples of how that formula only gets you so far in pro football.

by losangelesmets on Jul 21, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

You make a good point

But then miss it. Those two teams aren’t good examples. San Diego’s stars are almost all brought in through the draft, the same way New England and Indy work. Dallas has improved its record since bringing in high-profile players, so it hasn’t hurt them. Better examples would be the Vikings (at least so far), the Raiders, and THE prime example would be the Redskins (Trotter, Archuleta, Taylor and on and on).

Teams that pick up expensive free agents are usually indicative of being forced to try to make up ground. Your point should have taken you to teams that have won consistently are the same ones who have drafted well over time. The Pats are the poster children, but Indy, Jacksonville, San Diego and the Steelers have done well. The Giants have been good, especially with running backs and defensive players. It helps you manage the cap because for at least the first contract these players are good but come cheaper and rising stars are always waiting to replace a guy the team can’t afford to keep. The best teams know which veterans to keep and which to pass on.

If Eli can

keep playing at the level of champion this season because Shockey isn’t causing drama, then this is great. I just think Shockey is mentally tough, like Eli. I had hopes he would put his energy into reestablishing his place of respect. I only hope now when he faces the Giants he doesn’t make it his personal mission to have the game of his life. I have a feeling he is going to though. At least he went to New Orleans and not like the Eagles or something.

by johnd134 on Jul 21, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Shock in NO

This could loom as big trouble for the Giants down the road. Peyton knows how to utilize Shockey and with something to prove, I expect he’ll have a great run there. I also think that Shockey will like playing with Brees. The Saints have made some good moves (and a couple of bad ones) and could be a contender again. Could we meet in the playoffs and have to face that distraction? At least we won’t have to play them in the reg season.

I know Shock has been a pain and this was the right move, but I’m still going to miss him. He was a beast for this team, playing his butt off every play.

by potroast on Jul 21, 2008 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Clever move done by Reese??

Getting rid of Shockey could actually have be done for motivating the giants. This giving critics another way to dismiss any hope of the Giants making another playoff run. Therefore just another way for Coughlin to use for motivating all of the players. Suggestion for training camp t-shit: “New shocking season”.

Glad they are showing faith in Boss.

If it weren’t for his performance in the last 6 games of the season this deal would not have been made. But the front office saw something in Boss to give him the reins for the top spot next year. I am a big fan of Boss and I hope that he quickly makes us forget about Shockey.
Shockey’s act was interesting the first few years but that was only because he put up the numbers to back up his mouth. However as his numbers/production went down his mouth just got louder. I wish him luck in NO as long as we don’t play them.

by DuckinNC on Jul 21, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

I'm happy to see this.

Much as I loved Shockey over the years I agree with DoctorK16 (natch!) that his attitude just makes him not worth it. I’ll be rooting for him to do well in NO, just not at our expense. Best wishes, good luck, and a little bit of good riddance too.

Watch me paste this pathetic palooka with a powerful paralyzing perfect pachyderms percussion pitch.

Shockey Next Year - Recovery

There is another issue that hasn’t been touched on in discussing Shockey – Exactly how “back” will he be next year. Generally speaking, it seems to take a full year for a receiver with a broken leg to regain their preinjury level of play.

Of course the speed of the recovery depends on a lot of things, but I think that timing is also an issue. Shockey did not participate in any drills in minicamp, part of that might have been to express his displeasure, but part might also be that he isn’t at full speed yet. Will he be at full speed for the opening of training camp? – I would guess he’ll be close, but not all the way there. In addition to being a hard worker, and playing with great intensity, he is also known as a hard partier, and as years go on, that will slow down his recovery.

Frankly, I don’t think Shockey has been the same player since the 2004 foot injury. He will still be a very good player, and may make a few game turning catches. But, I think his best days are behind him

It will be interesting to hear how Jeremy and Bourbon street get along!

good riddance to bad rubbish.. It’s a shame that I have to root against the Saints this year..

I honestly didn't think it was going to happen

after it didn’t happen on draft day.

Bummer. Good luck, Shock.

Am I the only one concerned about TE situation

JRS1940,
What are the chances of one of these guys stepping up in camp and producing like #80. Who is going to give us 2-3 drops a game, a dirty look when Eli misses him and throwing somoeone under the bus at end of game?
