Tyree will be fighting to hang on

David-tyree-catch_mediumRead lots of speculation yesterday that Super Bowl hero David Tyree could find himself out of a job this season.

With third-round pick Mario Manningham added to a deep corps of receivers that includes Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Steve Smith and Sinorice Moss the questions about Tyree's ability to make the team are justified.

Tyree will also be fighting for a roster spot with Michael Jennings, free agent DJ Hall and return man, special teams ace Domenic Hixon.

"I have no reason to really worry," he said. "I've proven myself when I've been given the opportunity. I'm not that concerned. It's not that big of a deal to me. I just have to get back to being healthy and do the things that I can do.

"Making the catch was a great opportunity, but I can't rest on it. I have to work hard. There's always something to prove. You always have to have the competitive edge."

The reality is the Giants don't need Tyree as a receiver. He caught only four balls in the regular season last season and has 54 catches in five seasons.

His value is really in coverage, and that's a job Hixon can also do.

It would be a cruel blow to the Super Bowl hero if he can't make the 2008 team. Yet, there are no guarantees.

Sentimentally I would like to see Tyree make the team. In the end, though, I want to see the Giants win.

If Tyree isn't one of the best 53 players, then so be it.

David Tyree

May wind up being a classic example of

“Some days your the bird, and some days your the statue”

What would have seemed unthinkable 4 months ago now seems likely. In my mind he is just the most logical odd man out

i hate to say it

but if the roles were reversed and Tyree’s catch came in the regular season and Hixon’s kick return came in the Super Bowl, would we even be having this conversation?

i would love to see Tyree make the team (even over Moss), but i have a feeling Hixon is going to end up beating him out because of his ability as a return guy.

Hixon

I love this guy. I want to see him get an opportunity to be the primary punt returner, as well.

Agreed

Hixon is a total burner and I think he goes into this season as the punt and kick returner. And if he shows any ability to catch the ball too….buh-bye Moss.

What about specials

People overlook how important special teams are. It’s nice that Tyree made that catch and it will go down in Giants lore. However, his worth on special teams trumps that to me. The guy has been and can be a pro-bowler on special teams alone. The one good thing about all of this speculation is that perhaps it will make Tyree pay more attention to what brought him to the dance, his special teams play. If he does that at the level he is capable of, then his wide reciever play is gravy and he should make the team no problem. What I would NOT like to see is the Giants cut him and having to watch him kill us 2 or more times per season in a Cowboy, Redskin, or Eagle uniform.

Specials

I actually think tyree’s work on Specials is overrated. He was tremendous at this his first couple of years, but you hardly ever see him making plays there anymore—at least that’s my gut reaction when I think about it. I think he’s been living off his rep a little bit.

I think it's all well and good...

...to be bloodless when making these kinds of decisions. But, once in a while, I think you do have to lead with the heart. I would be annoyed if they cut Tyree..especially if it comes down to him vs. Moss. Let’s not forget that he also caught a 4th quarter TD in the Super Bowl. Moss is undersized, and a bust. Tyree made one big catch in the Super Bowl, and one historic catch. That has to factor into any decision.

Trade Moss?

If Moss does ANYTHING in the preseason, I think Reese ought to figure out a way to try to get something for him, a 4th rounder maybe? I mean anything – a bottle of Silver Oak ‘00 Cab?

Chances are, someone will have some freak injuries to their WR corps this off-season. Someone will be desperate for WR depth and everyone likes fast WR’s. I think someone would take a chance on Moss for a lower rd draft choice.

his special teams rep?

That would seem like a oxymoron. However, I remember the reason I loved Tyree is cause he was making every special team tackle it seemed. Nowadays that seems to be Blackburn all over the place.

Yeah the only play most people remember

was not getting off the field in the Superbowl. I still think he could be a starting LB and,it wouldn’t surprise me if he took over one of the outside spots.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

He hasn't been the same

since he broke his wrist. A few years ago I figured him to be the second coming of Reyna Thompson.

Moss

Aren’t we making too many assumptions about Moss? Speaking of living off reps and such, apparently we have mistaken him to be Santana. I know he SAYS this and that, but he has said ‘this’ and ‘that’ already. The proof hasn’t come up in the pudding just yet.

I’d rather have Tyree than an unproven guy who has done little, other than seemingly stay injured.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

I think the competition will be

between Jennings, Smith, and Moss for the one or two smurf spots. With Smith a lock, it’ll be tough for either Jennings or Moss to stay.

by TerraByte on Jun 5, 2008 7:00 PM EDT   0 recs

Right now

Smith is the number 3 receiver and currently in the best position to work into number 2 as Toomer declines. Assuming Plax, Toomer, and Smith all stay healthy, I would not be surprised to start seeing Smith and Toomer sharing the number 2 spot more and more.

Every player on the team has to earn his slot, but #3 receiver is Smith’s to lose

Wide receiver

is a position where a rookie has a good opportunity to break into the starting lineup his first year. I still think Moss may be productive but he’d better be looking over his shoulder and not just to catch the ball. Manningham might just eclipse him.
