Who's it gonna be -- Bavaro or Shockey?
Rosey Brown with 60% of the vote and Jumbo Elliott with 33% were overwhelming choices for the offensive tackle slots on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.
We have reached the point in our selection of players where we will begin discussing the skill positions.
First up is tight end, and that of course means a choice that will largely be between Mark Bavaro and Jeremy Shockey. Also on the ballot will be Bob Tucker.
I am anxious to see how this one will play out. Will the old-school Bavaro get more support than Shockey, the unhappy but undeniably talented current tight end? Will anybody remember how good Tucker, a great player on awful teams, was?
Let's break them down.
Mark Bavaro -- His 351 catches in 9 seasons hardly tell the story. His toughness and blocking were essential parts of the Giants offense in the late '80s.
Jeremy Shockey -- We're all angry with Shockey right now. He has, however, caught 371 passes in six seasons. Look past his current strained relationship with management, and he deserves strong consideration here.
Bob Tucker -- Tucker played from the Giants from 1970 to 1977 and caught more than 50 passes three times. He finished his career with 422 catches.
Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team

Voted Bavaro
Not because i’m currently unhappy with Shocks’ behavior. After consideration MB got my vote because Shockey probably has about 100 more dropped balls at this point in his carreer.
We're only gonna score 17 points?

Going with Shockey
because I think he is undeniably more talented than Bavaro, and at his best, he is just as tough. The dropped balls are annoying, but he didn’t really start dropping a ton of balls until Coughlin came and made him less of a focal point in the passing game, so I think they are more a concentration issue than a bad hands issue. Now, that, coupled with his currenty feuds made me think long and hard about voting for him, but then I realized that the head coach of the all-time team would probably be Parcells, and if anyone could keep Shockey in line and his head in the game, it would be 1980’s era Parcells.
By the way, Ed, are we going to be voting on coaches too, or will we finish once we’ve got all the players?
Coach
Yes, we will vote on a coach. I am even wondering if we should stop and name the coach before we finish w/the players. I’m thinking it seems kind of anti-climactic to do it afterward. Your thoughts, and anyone else’s on that would be appreciated.

Let's vote on coach next.
Since cj mentioned that he thought Parcels for example could have had a more positive effect on Shockey than TC, it might be a good idea to get this position established before any of the other skill positions in particular are decided.
By the way i have to disagree on this point since Jeremy didn’t respect the”homo” when he was still kind of new to the league, and because even the “nearly sainted” one couldn’t convert the likes of T.O. That said he’s already got my vote.

Coach
That’s not a bad idea. We only have receiver, running back and QB left after this. I wasn’t intending to have us vote on kick returners. I’d like to have the coach done before we finish the players, so maybe I’ll do the coach next.

Are we just gonna vote for Head Coach
or will we have votes for offensive and defensive coordinators too? Landry vs. Belichick for defensive coordinator would be verrrry interesting, and that’s not even counting other successful guys like Fox and Spags.
Just head coach
I think that’s enough. We can certainly debate coordinators, but that’s probably getting carried away.

That's interesting cj
I always attribute Shockey’s drops to not being on the same page as Eli, but the concentration theory actually makes a lot of sense. Now that I think about it, Shockey always worked out in Miami and still was on the same page as Collins.
Anyway, I’m voting for Bavaro because he would never lose concentration because he wasn’t getting the ball enough. He was team first and didn’t need Parcells to keep his head in the game. Also, I’m not so sure Shockey is undeniably more talented than Bavaro.
I love Shockey the player
But I voted Bavaro. The man could have played football in any era, and the site of him carrying the entire 49er organization on his back is one of those “forever etched in my memory” plays
I’ll take Bavaro over Shockey all day long

Right on,jr
As a matter of fact, I’d probably take Tucker, a forgotten hero from the Wilderness Years, vs. Shock is, I assume, a much closer call than younger BBVers realize.

Tucker
I’m glad you brought it up. Tucker was a terrific player. I know he’ll get very little support in this vote, but the guy could really play.

An honorable mention
should go out to Howard Cross as well. While never a premier pass catcher, I always thought he was one of the best blocking TE’s I’ve ever seen, after Bavaro
He would garner any votes, but I’ll give him a jrs1940 “tip of the cap”
Plus, he caught a few big passes in SB 25, causing Chris Berman to remark during the post game highlights “Howard Cross is KILLING THE BILLS!”
Derek Brown have any votes yet? Nope, not yet…...

Someday maybe
Shockey will be #1, but as it stands today Mark Bavaro was the best. A very capable receiver on an offense that didn’t throw the ball all that much, and a more than capable blocker on a team that depended on the running game. Not to mention his name is synonymous with toughness.
And any guy
Nicknamed “Rambo” is ok with me

Shockey
He has better numbers, but he has buttered fingers.
Bavaro went in and did what he needed to, when he needed to, so that the team would be successful.
As famous as Strahan’s smile was after a sack, so is Shockey’s grimace after dropping a catchable ball. If it touches both hands, it should be a catch. Especially if you play tight end. I’m going with Bavaro.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
Can I do a pre-emptive write in for Boss?
I’m kidding. It’s gotta be Bavaro; if nothing else based solely on Shockey’s actions over the course of his career.
Shockey seems more talented – but I’d rather have a warrior like Bavaro any day of the week (hence my sarcastic vote for Boss!!)
LOL
At least you didn’t write in Visanthe Shiancoe!!

ETVal
why not vote on Kick, punt returners and gunners too. Between now and the end of July can be a long, long month. Maybe I can instigate it this way. Who had more guts,Leon Bright or Phil McConkey? Best gunner Reyna Thompson or SUPERBOWL Hero Tyree. KR, Hixon.or Dixon. Bet there’s a few I left out too.

Best kick returner
The Giants have had - at least in the last 30 years - is Dave Meggett. IMHO I doubt there’s even a real argument for anybody else.

At least Shiancoe kept his mouth shut...
TE’s should NOT be prima donnas. The best in the league: guys like Gates/Heap/Gonzales/Witten really for the most part just keep their mouths shut and produce. Don’t get me wrong, I love Shockey, but he makes it seem like he is the victim here – it infuriates me.
Parcells....
He’s my candidate for one of the top three coaches in NFL history. He has performed the most difficult task for a coach. The turnaround. And he didn’t just do it once. Also has an uncanny eye for how to utilize whatever talent he has to work with.
I voted for Bavaro. In spite of posessing great talent, Shockey has not yet contributed enough as a team player to warrant the honor of beling annointed the all time Giant tight end. Since the memories of his career focus more on his smirking, self centered agenda of personal stats rather than the success of the team as a whole, he doesn’t yet deserve our vote. I wonder if he would even have lasted two years if he had to play under the conditions Tucker had to endure.

shockey's best moment
I voted Bavaro, but this does make me think of my favorite Shockey moment. the game escapes me, but it was a duck into the end zone that Brian Dawkins had in his hands for the pick, and Shockey wrestled out and landed right on top him for the TD, and just started nodding his head: “Oh yeah, that’s right, I caught it!”
