Should Kiwi replace Strahan?
OK, so Michael Strahan has retired. Now what? Do the Giants move Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, or use Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Renaldo Wynn and whoever else proves worthy?
The players are apparently already lobbying for Kiwi to go back to defensive end , his natural position.
It doesn't seem to matter to Kiwanuka.
“I’ve been through the whole ‘What position are you going to play?’ thing,” he said. “The only way I can approach it is wait until I hear something. But right now I’m a linebacker and that’s the way I’m going to approach the upcoming mini-camp.”
OK, Big Blue View Nation. It's now reality that Strahan is gone. Where do you want to see Kiwi play? Vote in the poll.

After saying all last season
he should move back to his natural position,(he was just finding his way at LB when he broke his leg), I think it’s not too hard to trust Spags’ judgment and see how things turn out. Who would have guessed after moving to linebacker you’d see him lined up at tackle? I’m more interested to see what new in season alignments and schemes are instituted this year knowing there are bound to be some interesting wrinkles coming.
We're only gonna score 17 points?

The Giants have two great DEs in Osi and Justin.
So why move Kiwi back? As bbwc says, let the coaches use him as they envisioned using him. Remember, they moved him to LB before they knew if Stray would be back.

Agreed
with all of the above. It’s also been said here before that what his listed position is doesn’t really matter, he’s going to be lined up all over the place (LB, DE, DT) anyway. If he starts at LB, then both him and Tuck see more playing time and that’s all that I’m concerned about.

I agree
i love the hybrid idea. Make the offense figure out who is on the field and where they are lined up. Get the talent on the field, that’s the main thing.

Just looking at the numbers
The Kiwi question is moot. He’s going to make the team, learn to play linebacker, get moved around a lot from LB to the line, and eventually become the second coming of LT. I think the answer is to let Kiwanuka define the position rather than pigeonholing him into a position.
For everyone else, though, it’s a numbers game. Consider this. Currently on the roster, there are (assuming I can count right):
LB: 2 players with 8+ years; 4 players with 3-4 years; 3 players with 0-1 years
DE: 3 rookies; 2 players with 2-4 years; 2 players with 6+ years
DT: 4 players with 0-1 year; 2 players with 3 years; 1 player with 9 yearsies
Of the rookies, I think the two LBs have more potential than the five rookie linemen, but ignore them for the moment. There are 23 players at DE/DT and LB, of which maybe eight are rookies and fifteen are veterans. I think they’ll keep twelve total (remember, the giants have an unsettled secondary and too many good WRs). That means for every rookie LB/DE/DT you keep, you have to cut a veteran. If some younger guys step up, Winn and Clark may never play for the Giants. At LB, I think Pierce and Kiwanuka are locks, leaving Wilkinson, Blackburn, Clark, DeOssie, and the two rookies to fight for four slots. At DT, I think you have to keep Cofield and Robbins, and at DE, Tuck and Osi. That leaves two slots for everybody else.
Let’s face it, the media is going to say the Giants line will fall apart without Strahan. In fact, I think Osi, Robbins, Cofield, and Tuck will work just fine. But last year, LB was always a concern. Expect to see Kiwi and Pierce, but who will be the third guy? I think that’s the question.

Good analysis
Reese has loads of room to wheel and deal.

Kiwi...
I think he is more effective at end than linebacker where he was placed when we were very short on talent there. We were lucky last year that he wasn’t exploited at his new position more than he was. I like wilkinson as a starter this year( he has a great nose for the ball) and Blackburn and DeOssie should get a lot more playing time this year.
Pierce in the middle is a good signal caller and plays well on emotion, but is only an average tackler, too small to plug the middle, and takes way too many bad penalties. We need a new middle linebacker soon.

I think
you are selling Kiwi short as a guy who can be moved around and wreak havoc in a variety of different ways.

Health
Have there been any tidbits about his recovery or how he’s looking on the field? And I’m not talking about press releases from the organization. I’m assuming he’s fully recovered without anything lingering.
With that assumption, seeing him move from one spot to the other doesn’t bother me at all. It’ll give our foes a headache trying to match up the right man against him. He could actually be a “key” of sorts, if they shift him around and let people wonder where he’s gonna line up next; great defensive plays are made sometimes because of stupidity on the offense’s part.
Thing is, Kiwi, don’t ever stop until you hear the whistle. Hit the guy, penalty or no penalty. Hit him now and worry about all else later.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
