Questions I Would Ask the Coaches at S.E.C. Media Days Bar-right-arrows

Collins added to BBV All-Time Team

Mark Collins scored a decisive victory over Mark Haynes in the balloting for the second cornerback slot on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team, winning 31-15.

That shows what I know, I guess, since I didn't even have Collins on the original ballot.

Now we move on to safety. We have already given Hall of Famer Emlen Tunnell a spot on the team, so that leaves us with one safety slot remaining to fill out our defense.

Here are your nominees.

  • Spider Lockhart -- Played for the Giants through the 'Wilderness Years,' from 1965-75. He was named to two Pro Bowls and had 41 career interceptions. If you want some trivia, his real name is Carl. He also punted occasionally for the Giants during his first few seasons, and also did some punt returning.
  • Jimmy Patton -- Now this is a name I knew absolutely nothing about, but George Cronin and 'potroast' both nominated him. A quick look and I see why. Patton played for the Giants from 1955-66, was named to five Pro Bowls and was first-team All Pro five times. He finished his career with 51 interceptions. Patton also did some punt and kick returning. Perhaps George can tell us a bit more about him.
  • Dick Nolan -- Before becoming a highly successful coach with the 49rs, Nolan played for 9 years in the NFL, 7 with the Giants. He had 23 career interceptions.
  • Terry Kinard -- Kinard spent 8 seasons in the NFL, and was a Giant from 1983-89. He made one Pro Bowl appearance. Had 31 career interceptions.
  • As always, vote in the poll attached to this post. Voting will close Thursday night.

I voted for Patton because

1. 5 times All-pro
2. Outside of Meggett and Tunnell, the best kick returner the Giants ever had.
3. Outside of Tunnell, the best ball hawk we ever had.
4.An important cog in the great defenses of the Glory Years.

Thanks, George

If I actually voted, I would follow your lead on this one. I have stayed out of the voting, though.

btw

During the discussion on an earlier we talking about Shaun Williams. Obviously, no one thought he belonged on the list, but someone just jogged my memory that one of the last plays he made was the offsetting Personal Foul at the end of the SF playoff debacle. That should have disqualified him right there :)

also

I was shocked this morning in my uncaffeinated state of mind to load the page and think that Kerry Collins made the All-Giants team

Patton...

Made a huge number of tackles in big games. Trust me, I liked Spider Lockhart but Patton was way better.

Never saw Patton

I voted for Spider because on a team that sucked, he always gave his all.

Plus he had a cool nickname

Spider

It’s hard to say how good this guy way. Was he better than he looked? Or, did he only look good because the teams he played on stunk. No way to really tell.

He made a lot of tackles because the people in front of him were so bad, but

he didn’t stand out in the way a Van Pelt did. As with Collins and Haines, the choice between Patton and Spider is close, but to my mind not as close. I’d give Patton the edge as a defender. His return skills tip the balance in his direction for sure.

Spider

Spider made a lot of tackles but many of them were running down receivers who had already caught the ball. Of course that was not all his fault since he played with cornerbacks the likes of Pete Athas. Spider was quite athletic though and I watched him make some spectacular interceptions.

I was at Yankee Stadium for the very last game the G-Men played there. It was against Miami. I don’t remember what year that was but our quarterback was Norm Snead. I got my only chance to see Paul Warfield ln that game and I think Spider grabbed an interception from him.

But Patton still gets my vote.
