Manning to Tyree - Give it a name!

[EDITOR'S NOTE: A couple of mainstream Giants' writers have already asked their readers to do this, but I haven't seen a name yet that I like. So, have at it people.]

The incredible Eli Manning to David Tyree throw and catch in SB XLII was arguably the greatest single play in Super Bowl history.  It deserves a name.  We'll always remember Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception and Dwight Clark's Catch. I say we just call it The Play.

I don't believe the name is taken, and it's difficult to come up with another name which focuses on both Eli's escape from an almost certain sack and Tyree's incredible helmet-assisted catch. I can't come up with anything else that does it justice.

Any ideas?

the giant snatch
that was the consensus picked on the blog that shall not be named.

Nameless
There are some blogs you can go right ahead and name, there are other large, yet juvenile fan sites we shall not discuss here.

haha, yeah i know you abhor that site
i like the name for th catch tho, if you dont mind  potty mouthed juvenile jokes, which i am of course, a sucker for.

The Play
is unfortunately taken, for the rugby-like football play for my beloved Cal Bears.

You can probably youtube and watch it if you're interested in knowing what that was.  The announcing--a hundred times better than the Buck-Aikman call for the Miracle (I think I liked that coming off the tongue).

The Play
There's no reason why your Golden Bears can't have their "Play" and Super Bowl lore have its own "Play."  It's such a generic term, and no one will confuse college ball with the NFL anyway.  Similarly, "The Catch" is shared by Montana-to-Clark and Willie Mays' incredible over-the-shoulder grab of Vic Wertz's line drive in the 1954 World Series.

We
have to keep in mind that it wasn't just the Tyree catching the ball, but Eli scrambling out of the pile. The name must somehow contain both...

by All Day on Feb 15, 2008 5:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's why
it's so damn difficult.  Anything you come up with will either give short shrift to one or the other.

A commenter
on another blog suggested the "Mann-Hattan."

Think that one's kinda clever, myself.

by knickfan on Feb 15, 2008 5:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Or, to further embellish on that idea -
The Mann-Hattin' Transfer:

what you "catch" to "escape the rush" hour.

+2
That's a good one.

I think it should
encompass a way we HAVE been thinking about it naturally.  I think about it as Eli-to-Tyree, and probably always will.  This works for me partly because it is so damn rare.  Eli-to-Burress would have you asking "which one?"  But Eli-to-Tyree?  Known immediately.

Of course, it's not that stylin'.  I've heard a WFAN call suggest "E2T" and "ET," but I don't like those much.

----------

What about "the Hookup"?  "The Connection"?  Too much of a drug-connotation?

Originally thought "The Great Escape," but gotta keep maxmike's comment in mind.

MY GOD.  Is this really happening?  Are we really sitting here thinking of what to name the play that helped the Giants win the Super Bowl?  I keep expecting to wake up and find the Giants were 7-9 with Reese scrambling in the offseason to find a Kurt Warner type to push Eli next year.

Are you sure this is real life?

by giantwolf on Feb 15, 2008 5:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

There are soo many!
I like "The Hookup" and "The Connection" too. I just figured "The GIANT Play" is an overall label to the whole play in general. It has our name in it, and it was a GIANT play out of Eli and Tyree to make. They are apart of the GIANT, GIANTS play to win the superbowl! So why not keep this play with our teams name.

Just my idea....

the grasp
eli was in the grasp of the patriots defense, david tyree grasped the ball against his helmet.

i think it works.

Off topic, but
Has anyone else seen Eli Manning in Gatorade's League of Clutch Commercial? I got so fired up watching it from my kitchen, I started jumping up and down in excitement. Check it out:

Cool Commercial
 The Giant Snatch....

What about "The Exorcism"?
See, you've got swivel (Eli), the head (Tyree) and the ejection of the evil elements.

I do appreciate that this may not actually catch on.

My other ideas:

"Head On:  Apply Directly to the Forehead"

and

"Spinsanity"

I've been calling it
"The Play" since the moment it happened, and unless there's an official consensus one day (which I doubt there will be), that's what I'm gonna keep calling it.

by cjmulrain on Feb 15, 2008 11:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

SuperBowl Play Name
Heres the thing about naming this play.  Most only cover half of it.  I've heard Hail Manning and Catch 42.  Eli's escape without Tyree's catch is just a great job of getting out of a sack.  Tyree's catch without Eli's escape is just a great grab.  You have to cover both in the name which makes it hard.  Thats why I first thought of "The Dash and Snatch".  Then I watched one of my favorite movies and it hit me, "The Shawshank Reception".  I've hear this name on PFT lately and a few other spots but I put it into the contest for WFAN and the Daily News as well before I ever heard it there.  Either way it doesnt matter but I do think that should be the name.

"The Shawshank Reception"

It covers Eli's great escape and Tyree's great catch.

Catch 42....
was the winner in the NY Daily news poll.  I think that has a chance to stick.

Three more funny ones...
Three  more funny ones were the "Cheater Beater", "The Holy Flail" and "the Flee to Tyree".

I like Catch 42 - Nice literary reference.
The Cheater Beater?  That would be Plaxico's TD grab with 00:39 to go.

by django48 on Feb 16, 2008 8:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What a great name
The "cheater beater" IS the best name for Burress' game winner.  Still haven't heard one that really sticks for "the play" though. Catch 42..........not really.

The Brotherhood Bomb
because that's how we played all year

or
"Escape to Faith"  (what Manning did to who Tyree is)

or
"The We Own the Road Rally"

or
"The G-Man to G-Man Train"

more as I think of them

by bluetampa on Feb 16, 2008 9:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

david and eli-ath?
my sister came up with that one.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Feb 16, 2008 2:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

how about
the "No Sack Trap"

or
the "2 minute thrill"

or
the "G-Man Helmet Heave"

or
the "Impossible Connection" (same ring as Immaculate Reception)

bluetampa as in GIANTS Blue...not a sad bucs fan.

The beginnings of a dynasty...and I got to see it!  awesome!!!

Hail Tyree
Instead of Hail Mary.... The Hail Tyree?

Kind of ignores the Manning Escape.

But I am sticking with Hail Tyree until I hear something I like better.

I wonder what TruePatsFan is calling it?

My dying words will be "Go Giants!"

No Sack Trap, Two Minute Thrill
My personal favorites of the ones I've submitted, followed closely by "Impossible Connection".

Any thoughts?  If anyone is still reading this...

by bluetampa on Feb 18, 2008 12:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I like both aspects of Impossible Connection
just not together.

It would be great to have some play on "Mission Impossible" or maybe just leave it at that,

and with Connection, it would be cool to have a play off of "French Connection" but I can't think of what it might be.

by Mr Met on Feb 18, 2008 12:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

the rhythm of it
I like that everyone thought our victory was impossible...that the connection would never happen...and it has the same ring and rhythm as the "Immacualte Reception"

I'm still thinkin!  :o)
