Just a Couple Things I am wondering

This doesn't really have anything to do with the Giants this season but I've just had a couple thing on my mind lately related to the giants

  1. Tiki - The Giants of the Late 90's and and early 2000's will defintitely be represented by Strahan, a definite first ballot HOFer and a lock to have his # retired, but what about Tiki? he was a huge part of our history, is a career Giant, was a fan Fave when he played (even though he was hated after he retired early), and is top 10 in all time yards-from -scrimage. Should he 1. be in the HOF, and 2. have his # retired*
  2. Harry Carson - I really don't feel comfortable talking about any Giant having their Number retired without bringing up Carson. He did everything you can want in a career, he won a superbowl, made the HOF and is a lifetime Giant. I kind of get why Bavaro's # isn't retired, his Giants career was too short, but Carson played for around 10 years. Do you think that Carson's number 53 should hang with Simms'  11 and LT's 56 as well as all of the other Giants greats

So comment away I really want to know what the Giants community thinks

What I think: Tiki wil get nominated for the HOF and may slip in on maybe the 3rd or 4th try. I think he was a great Giant and should have 21 retired and if the bad feelings toward him ever roll over I think he will. Why Carson's # isnt retired I will never know and it is a crime. But its too late now and harry will unfortunately be left out of our "Ring Of Honor"

*yes I know Kenny Phillips wears 21 right nowbut that doesn't wean it cant be retired later, for example I believe the Knicks do intend to retire Allan Houstons 20 even though Jared Jefferies curently wears it.

I can tell you this much

It is harder to retire numbers in football, because you have so many on the roster.

That coupled with the fact that each position is only allowed to wear certain numbers, it makes it hard for teams to retire many numbers.

My take on your other questions is: Harry should be retired. Tiki no.

The Giants only have a few retired numbers, and I believe one of them is for Al Blozis, whose number was retired after he was killed in WWII.

HOF yes

retired number, no. Like jrs said, it’s tough retiring numbers in football, and Tiki, while I believe he should be a no-doubt-about-it hall of famer, didn’t do enough as a Giant to merit that honor (football’s the only sport where you have to do more to get your # retired than you do to get in the HOF). He never even won a title as a Giant. Strahan’s number, on the other hand…

And regarding the HOF candidacy, consider this: the only 2 running backs in NFL history who have rushed for anywhere near the amount of yards as Tiki while averaging more YPC are Barry Sanders and Jim Brown.

Strahan

is the ultimate Giant of the last 20 years, (say, 90-‘10 giving him an overlap on each end) he’s not only been the dominant player at his position and a great team leader, but also a great sprotsman and ambassador for the team and the game. now THERE’s a guy who should have his number hung from the rafters, and his career serves as an example of what it takes and why Ticky isn’t in the same company.

You play to win the game!

Why can't the numbers just have a special place of honor

while still allowing them to be used currently? Sure no one in my lifetime will be able to wear 56 for example but, how many of us remember Blozis? We could still have his NAME and number honored at the stadium and use the number too. I don’t think this would be any less respectful to the man or his accomplishments. Men should be honored , they make the numbers special.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

No one anywhere in any sport

Should wear 56….ever.

To me, 99 (Gretzky), 7 (The Mick), and 56 should be universally retired from sports.

And 13 for Danny Kanell

gretsky was different

Because he played for so many teams. However, look how many young linebackers want to wear 56

Maybe 56 and 99

but what did Mickey Mantle do deserve that honor. It’s not like he revolutionized sport or anything, he was simply another great player who may have underachieved a bit because of his partying. 3,24 or 42 mean much more to me.

Tiki will...

not make the HOF. While one of the best, if not best of all time RB for the Giants, he will not be elected to the HOF. The two biggest reasons will be:

1 – He was never considered the best, 2nd best, and maybe not even the 3rd best RB during his playing time.

2 – Way to many fumbles and not nearly enough TD’s during his career.

Tiki did come on strong at the end of his career, but the low TD numbers combined with the high fumble numbers I believe will keep him out of the HOF.
