Argh!
I forgot all about that. David Carr!! Yee-hah!! Quarterback controversy right before the playoffs! LOL!! Good thing Wade Phillips doesn’t coach this team!

I would love nothing more than to see Carr light the Vikings up.
He has been unduly ridiculed over the years. But I’m pulling for him. He might be like Earl Morrell, who was a far better reliever in his later years than he ever was as a starter. At lest that’s the way I remembered it…can you corroborate that George?

The thing about Morral
is that he played for 20 years. During those years he was on good teams and bad teams
He started all the games for the Colts in 68 when they went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Jets. (Unitas was injured in the preseason) 13-1 regular season record
He also replaced Johnny U in 1970 and won the Super Bowl
He replaced Griese in game 5 and led the dolphins most of the way through there undefeated season, although it was Griese who started in the Super bowl.
I think the main reason you remember Morrall as better in his later years is that he was on two very good teams. (the Colts and Dolphins) whereas earlier in his career he was on a very bad Giants team.
As for Carr, I think that there is a good chance he could revive his career
EFS has you answer, 57
Morral did come back after everyone had figured he was through.
Yeah, I remember the
Super Bowl against the Jets in 68 real well. I was working for Ingersoll Rand fresh out of college. It was a large office with about 500 salaried people. Most of the guys said they weren’t going to bother watching the game because the Colts were going to murder the Jets. Don’t forget, the Super Bowl wasn’t that big of a deal back then, especially since the NFL was creaming the AFL teams every year.
I was working on my car and at the last minute decided to watch the game alone. As the game played out and the Jets looked like they were going to win, all of a sudden Unitas limped back in, and nearly got the Colts back in the game. I think if he had come in a little sooner the Colts might have pulled it out. It was a remarkable performance by Unitas since I think he was still injured.
Then, the next year I think, the Mets managed to beat Baltimore in the World Series, which was just as astonishing. Then damned if the Chiefs didn’t beat the Vikings in the 69 Super Bowl. I think that was the game when he was wired and uttered that “65 toss power trap” comment. I still love to watch that clip. Old Hank was a great guy!

Morral
I think that Kerry Collins is a better parallel to Morrall than Carr – Remember that Collins started this year as a sub. I do think Collins has a better arm than Morrall ever did, but in both cases, they bounced around a number of teams, and as they got older, they played smarter
As for Carr? Ask again in 10 years
