TC won't take his foot off the gas
It should come as no surprise to New York Giants' fans that coach Tom Coughlin has no plans to let the Giants sit back and relax Sunday, in what is a mostly meaningless game for them against the Minnesota Vikings.
I disagree with the idea that you have nothing to gain. There is a lot to be gained. If you believe, as we do, that you have to be playing your best football at this time of the year you certainly do have some things to build on and particularly when you are not going to play for a couple of weeks.
This is, basically, the same decision Coughlin had to make in Week 17 last season against the New England Patriots.
Personally, I am all for not shutting it down Sunday against Minnesota. I think it's too difficult to regain the edge needed in the playoffs if you do that.
There is one exception, though. I would hope Coughlin will limit the participation of guys like Brandon Jacobs, Fred Robbins, Justin Tuck and anyone else who could use some time to heal.
Your thoughts?

I agree, to a certain extent
The Vikings now have everything to play for.
Jacobs, Tuck, Pierce, and Eli shouldn’t play more than a half.

TC has probably made up his mind
He seems like a purist, and perhaps things would be different if the Bears had lost. He went all out last year I think to (a) show his team they could compete with the best AND (b) because of an honest responsibility to the NFL and history — YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.
Now, if the Bears had lost there would truly be nothing at stake. But in a tiny way perhaps TC will not want to sell out the opportunity that the Bears have… the way Indy put the Browns out of the playoffs last year, etc.
Maybe I’m making that up and TC could care less about anything but the game in front of him. But I think he’s got the Denny Green philosophy when it comes to this one. Last year he was a genius for it and this year he’ll be called an idiot if Jacobs or Eli dies on the field. But it’s just the same philosophy with an open-ended outcome.
If it was me I’d have Jacobs in a sweatshirt in the second quarter and give Bradshaw the ball 30 times … I’d have David Carr in for the 2nd half… I’d take everybody who wasn’t 100% and minimize their play…
Now the question is, who’s a better head coach, me or Tom Coughlin?
You play to win the game!
Ross has a concussion(according to WFAN)
so he needs to sit. I wouldn’t mind seeing David Carr for a half no matter what the outcome or nature of the game at the half.
We're only gonna score 17 points?

I agree
I wouldn’t mind seeing him either. I don’t expect him to throw for 300 yards, but I think everybody likes to get a look at the backups now and then, and we like to see them succeed.

Public relations vs reality
Let’s say for a second that Coughlin’s plan was to rest everyone. Do you believe that he would say it? Imagine the reaction if he had said
“yeah, we don’t give a flying f—k about this game, so we’re going to play our scrubs”
Now, maybe he means exactly what he is saying, they are going to go all out and play their starters and play their best. Or, maybe he is saying what he has to for public consumption
our metaphysical friend in SF
makes a good point. Both sides of it, actually. Anyways, I was just over at the Vikes’ site and man it is crazy how depressed they all are! Many of their fans consider it a foregone conclusion that they will not be in the playoffs.

Viking Revenge
Yeah so its a meaningless game for the G-Men as far as the playoffs are concerned, but I still remember last year’s game against the Vikings and would love if our boys could pick off Jackson/Frerotte 4 times and embarress them.
41-0 Giants
Every time I have predicted the Giants by 40 or more, they have lost the game. Maybe we can buck that trend

I still remember
that game in the playoffs in the nineties.
We were up by 13 points I think, with a couple of minutes left in the game. Vikings score, made the on sidekick, which rebounded off the chest of Ike Hilliard if I am not mistaken (I think it was first Fassel playoff) they recovered and score a quick TD to win the game. So I don’t mind a little payback for that.
My Dad and his steelers gave me the love for football, but the Giants game me a Team
Agree with the original post
rest the guys who are injured, everyone else plays unless the game gets out of reach one way or the other
and expand the definition of injured
players that are dinged up, but who could play if needed, shouldn’t
As I recall
A couple of our guys got nicked up in the season finale against the Pats, but I doubt we would have gone all the way if we hadn’t come to play that night.
A head coach has to use his gut as well as his head to make decisions like these. Last year the right decision was to say “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” This year he may be a bit more careful but I promise you he won’t encourage a lackluster performance on the eve of the playoffs. Could someone get hurt? Yeah, that’s a risk each player takes every time he take the field.
I’m in favor of doing what will help us win the Super Bowl. Maybe that means some game time for those who may be called upon to perform in the playoffs. Maybe even some snaps for Carr, or perhaps just a cameo role for Jacobs. But I believe our organization has far too mcuh class not to play to win, especially considering the Bears plight.

Play all the starters you care to....
the vikings will win anyhow. i don’t want manning to get hurt, but our pass rush is alot scarier than it used to be. not tryin to start a fight, just winding you gents up a bit.
Green Bay or the Windy City..... There but for the Grace of God go I.
Save it
We’ve heard all kinds of trash talk all season long, and here the Giants sit with a 12-3 record. I could care less what happens Sunday, provided we don’t get anybody hurt. We aren’t getting all worked up over a meaningless game against the Vikings. We have bigger things to worry about.
As a Viking fan
I’m a bit torn on this. . .
There’s part of me that says, “Yeah, I hope the Giants play all their starters and if we don’t beat them we don’t deserve a spot in the playoffs.”
And the other part of me says, “Shut the hell up, stupid. . .do you want to make the playoffs or not?”
Then again, given recent Vikings’ history, Tom Coughlin might be able to trot the surviving members of the 1958 Giants out onto the field this Sunday and beat us anyway.
It’ll be interesting, I’ll say that much.

"given recent history"
I’d say bringing out the ‘58 Giants might be our best shot at beating you…Eli hasn’t exactly played his best against you guys!
That's kind of what I'm hoping for
For some reason, our D coordinators know how to get into Eli’s head. I don’t know why he’s been so bad against us, especially when one considers that our pass defense hasn’t exactly been top-notch over the past couple of seasons.

Trust me
Do not rest your starters. It didn’t work for us last year. You’ve still got the bye-week to rest up. TC has the right idea if he wants to play the starters.
