Giants Say Burress’s Season Is Over
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Giants officially ended Plaxico Burress’s season Tuesday afternoon, placing him on the reserve/non-football injury list and suspending him without pay for four games for conduct detrimental to the team for multiple and repeated violations of club rules.
Burress’s standing with the team had been in question since he accidentally shot himself in the leg with an illegal gun early Saturday morning at a Manhattan nightclub. On Monday he was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon; he faces a mandatory sentence of 3 ½ years in state prison, with a maximum of 15 years, on each count
The article is posted on the NY Times Web site and can be found here.
Welllllll.....that settles that. This is obviously the right move for the team given the uncertainties surrounding this situation.
And let's hope this is true (re: Antonio Pierce):
Michael Bachner, a lawyer for Pierce, said he was confident that Pierce’s name would be cleared. “We’re of the position that Mr. Pierce acted reasonably under what were enormously stressful circumstances, and that he didn’t violate any laws,” he said. “We’re confident that after the matter is fully discussed and explained with the district attorney’s office that they will arrive at the same conclusion.”

Nice job, Cody
Thanks for posting this while I was off having some dinner, reading a book and — temporarily — ignoring the Inter-Google.
I really have nothing to add.
a certain Matt Nathanson song comes to mind: it’s all been said before. Btw, if you’ve never heard Matt you should really check him out. He’s awesome. His live shows are amazing, he interracts with the crowd really well. It’s like one part stand up comedy/improv one part great music. Youtube him or buy his music. You’ll be glad you did.
Well
that sucks. Poor guy, his paranoia and stupidity can land him in the slammer w/ no more football. At least he won a championship and can almost live off that for some time. Wonder if he’s gunna open a car dealership w/ the money he may have lol.
the way I look at this now is....
If somehow Antonio is cleared of wrongdoing before the weekend, its over, at least for now.

I don't see
where Antonio can get in trouble. What for driving his boy to the hospital? There is not a single shred of evidence out there that suggests he was involved in obstructing justice. The cops got nothing on him but speculation. His attorney will laugh in their face if they try to bring anything to Pierce’s name.
who produced the gun?
Did Plax have it at the hospital? AP could be facing the same charge that Plax is if the cops want and maybe even an interstate federal charge as he supposedly drove though the Lincoln Tunnel with it.
Great job by the Giants' organization....
Take the matter into their own hands and not wait for the league. It sends a great message to the rest of the organization and the team that no one is above the team as an individual.
Plaxico Burress has had some big games against the Cowboys and as a fan of Dallas I must admit that I won’t miss him a bit. However, I also think that players who believe the law does not apply to them paint themselves into a corner as a poor role model and a bad mark on the NFL. I think suspensions for getting in trouble legally should be harsher, but its going to be a never ending battle dealing with 21 year olds who all of a sudden are millionaires.
By the way, I am aware that Pacman is on my team. I don’t like it.
That is why
the Giants will never turn into the Bengals. There will always be players who mess up, but the Giants stick to the ‘team over the individual’ philosophy. The guys who don’t get it don’t stay. BTW, thanks for the thoughtful post.
Does that surprise anyone else?
Maybe its just because I don’t follow the Giants that closely… but I had no idea he was that old. I would never have guessed he was over 28.
Usually, teams place a guy on the non football/injury list if they intend to recoup signing bonus money…
I heard/read
That after Vick you can’t recoup signing bonuses anymore so they will still have to pay him the 1 mil next week. But they can get ~27 mil back(or not pay it) of the 35 mil contract.
Thanks, K16
That article tells me that Plax has a good shot at not getting a prison sentence. I’m glad that his future isn’t quite as dim as I thought it might be when I first learned of the penalties provided by the statute. Mandatory isn’t as automatic as the word implies.

Gone.
The first thing I said to my wife when the news broke (she’s a good football fan) was, “He’ll never play another game in a Giants uniform.”
I’m proud of the way the team is willing to retain its character over pandering to talent. It’s the right decision, and it lets the team separate and move on with this season.
Not Quite over
The NFL Players Association intends to file a grievance against the Giants, challenging their suspension of Plaxico Burress and their decision to place him on the non-football injury list.
“The NFLPA is still reviewing the actions taken by the New York Giants relating to Plaxico Burress, but we intend to file a grievance challenging those actions,” the NFLPA said in a statement released a few moments ago. “We believe that Burress’ rights have been violated under the CBA.”
The union does not make it clear how those rights have been violated, or whether they are trying to have Burress reinstated this season.
According to one NFL source, the union is taking this action in attempt to help Burress recoup some of the $2 million he stands to lose this year alone. He will lose $823,529 in pay for his four weeks on suspension, plus the Giants may try to withhold the final, $1 million payment of his $4.25 million signing bonus. And on top of that, they have fined Burress an undisclosed amount for his actions. Under CBA rules, they are allowed to fine him one week’s pay ($205,882).
All tolled, this punishment could cost Burress $2,029,411.
The union took a similar action in September when Burress was suspended for two weeks and one game. They never actually filed the grievance, but they ended up negotiating a settlement with the NFL management council. As a result, instead of losing two week’s pay, Burress only ended up losing one.
