Salary Cap Help

Can someone explain the negative salary cap ramifications if the Giants were to severe their relationship with Plax? In other words, how could cutting his payroll actually hurt the club as some reports have suggested?

My thinking was, why not use that payroll to bring in another (team oriented) WR or other need. Housh, Braylon Edwards and others are free agents after the season.

Plax trying to use the "Manny being Manny" excuse shows he has no intentions to change. And those "me" guys just don't fit into the Giants team chemistry.

Not a cap expert, but ...

I will try. There is a good explanation of the cap here. At least, the best one I have found so far.

Basically, what it comes down to — if I understand it — is that Burress is due about $4 million in signing bonus money. If the Giants cut him BEFORE they have paid that money, which would be the case here, their salary cap would take a hit equal to the amount of the bonus — or $4 million.

Now, I am not 100% sure that is right. But, that is the way i read it.

That seems to be right. I’m amazed that the Giants were able to cut a deal with him that involved so little guaranteed money. Smart piece of business by Jerry Reese there. Seems like he was prepared for something like this happening. It’s similar to what the Eagles did with Terrell Owens. He got a massive $49 million deal, but very little of it was guaranteed, so it was more or less a series of one year deals that the team could get out of at any time with little or no effect on their cap. That’s sort of what the Giants did with Plax.

PLus, I think the 4 or 5 million in dead money that would result form cutting him can be spread out over this year and next if they wait until a certain date to let him go. So in terms of cap dollars, it really won’t have much effect on them at all.

I might be wrong, but I actually think if the Giants were to sue him to recoup signing bonus money they paid him and won… that money would eventually get put back on their cap.

Yea

I’ve read in multiple places that Reese and his assistants put a contract togeather that would cover them before it covered Plax. Really w/ all the brilliant moves Reese has done, there is no way this contract will screw our cap space.
