Never Too Soon To Start Thinking About A New WR...
'm as fed up as you all are about this Plax issue. As some of you know/remember, I was one of the first to speak out in his defense last week. However this latest incident it a selfish, obtuse, inane, immature, and ridiculous act. I'm tired of his BS, and I think he's a complete idiot. Ok, I got that off my chest; but its all a moot point; as he's never going to suit up for the mighty GMEN again.
Now, let's turn our thoughts to the Free Agent WR's out there. The guys below are all in their contract years (special thanks to FFToolbox.com for the information) - they're listed with their current team, age, and yrs of NFL experience):
| Miles Austin | WR | DAL | 24 | 2 |
| Hank Baskett | WR | PHI | 26 | 2 |
| Marques Colston | WR | NO | 25 | 2 |
| Bobby Engram | WR | SEA | 35 | 12 |
| Jabar Gaffney | WR | NE | 28 | 6 |
| Devery Henderson | WR | NO | 26 | 3 |
| T.J. Houshmandzadeh | WR | CIN | 31 | 7 |
| Justin Jenkins | WR | BUF | ||
| Bryant Johnson | WR | SF | 27 | 5 |
| Brandon Jones | WR | TEN | 26 | 3 |
| Ashley Lelie | WR | OAK | 28 | 6 |
| Dane Looker | WR | STL | 32 | 6 |
| Shaun McDonald | WR | DET | 27 | 5 |
| Brandon Middleton | WR | DET | ||
| Lance Moore | WR | NO | 25 | 3 |
| Roscoe Parrish | WR | BUF | 26 | 3 |
| Koren Robinson | WR | SEA | 28 | 7 |
| Derek Stanley | WR | STL | 1 | |
| Amani Toomer | WR | NYG | 34 | 12 |
| Jeff Webb | WR | KC | 26 | 2 |
I like the upside of Marques Colston a lot. He's big and tough - and seems to have really good hands.
Houshmandzadeh is a very solid WR who could come on the cheap; but I don't think he's a huge upgrade over the guys there now
Thoughts?

Ocho Cinco
He’s one I left off because he is still under contract to Cincy. Obviously he is a HUGE talent, but I think the Giants front office might be wary of bringing another “me-first” head-case at WR.

NO
the reason you would ditch plax would be because he is a distraction
plax has an attitude problem but Ocho Cinco is a three ring circus
the giants should settle for nothin less than Colston, TJ, or you can trade plax for some picks, nothing less than a first rounder, and then package those picks along with the picks they got for shockey and trade for boldin if they cant do that then they should keep plax
if he keeps causing problems you can trade him at the deadline
VVVV Roy williams got traded at the deadline and chambers did a year before him theres no reason plax cant be next

Hey Fellas, Dallas fan here
I come in peace, just wanted to point out that when Dallas traded for Roy Williams, they signed him to a long extension. Your info may be a bit dated.

Here's the thing
Who on that list is better than what is in house?
Colston and Hoozie, definitely. Other than that?

TJH
Agreed that he’s solid – but I don’t even think he’s that much better than the guys in house.

As a 3-time
Houshmananana owner, I love the guy, though he is on the older side. I think Colston is obviously the most attractive name on this list, and would absolutely LOVE the G-Men to get him (he’s a Hofstra grad to boot…local guy and would stick it to the Jets), but the only thing that concerns me is he has a bit of an injury history. If they could put a package together for Boldin, you do that deal yesterday. He might be the best receiver in the NFL, he’s still young, and he’s tough as nails.
Other than those 3, there’s nobody on this list who’s an upgrade over what we already have. Re-sign Amani, draft a tall, athletic WR (doesn’t have to be a first rounder, but let’s stay away from the small, fast guys, none of whom have panned out for us yet despite picking a ton of them over the past decade), and have some competition next year.

Colston and Housh
There the only #1 talent on there I think. i see so many teams every year through money at a guy who’s only been a great #2. You never know how that guy will perform when he’s 1) facing double teams he never got before, 2) facing the top corners on opposing teams, and 3) Difference in Scheme/QB. Best two examples of this are Peerless Price (playing opposite Moulds) and Jerry Porter (playing in the slot with HOF’s Jerry Rice and Tim Brown). Neither were remotely adaquete #1’s. Plax was is one of the few successful (I mean becoming what you paid for) free agent or traded WRs. The road is littered with guys who never performed the same. TO is only other one off the top of my head. I can think of a bunch of other guys who haven’t, Price, Porter, Keyshawn, Mushin Muhammad, Javon Walker.

Alvin Harper
That’s another guy you can add to the 2nd banana list who went elsewhere and sucked (he left Dallas to go to Tampa Bay) – that attention paid to Michael Irvin was huge…

TO
was already a #1 by the time he left SF though. Granted, he was the reason they let Rice walk (blasphemy), but it wasn’t like another team was taking a shot in the dark on him.
Also, not sure if you were talking about him with this, but keep in mind that while Boldin has had Larry Fitgerald opposite him the last few years, he also had one of the best seasons ever by a rookie WR before Fitz got there.

TJ Who's Your Mama
For sure or leverage some of our extra picks from Shockey and/or spare parts to get Calvin Johnson from Detroit
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

it would take a lot more than "spare parts"
to pry CJ from Detroit. that’s really the only player on that pathetic excuse for a team that is worth holding onto.

Well you dont really build around a WR
So they might be better served by maximizing his return.

could you imagine
without him, there’s literally not a single NFL-caliber player on that team developed by Matt Millen. If they trade CJ, that would have to be a record turnaround of players for a sports franchise (even quicker than the post-Isaiah Knicks!)

I will throw Bryant Johnson name in the ring.
Alright Colston and TJ are layups. Huge talent, probably really expensive and lots of suitors. if they can get one of these guys great, but here is a player I really like; Bryant Johnson.
Bryant Johnson is a underutilized talent in SF and previously in AZ. He is 6’2". Big, athletic with questionable hands. I haven’t seen him much this year, but I use to watch him in AZ and could not believe this guy did not get more playing time, but with Boldin and Fitzgerald, It was tough to find time. He has not proven to be a number 1 guy, but I think he could add that height and strength at WR that the Giants lack.
Anyone have an opinion of this guy?

6'2'' isnt really that big
considering how tall Plax is, Toomers gotta be bigger than that too. I would imagine Plax wont be replaced immediately.

he was great in college
But I don’t think you can say he was under utilized in Arizona, Boldin played him out of a job

Before I read
any comments I stopped reading the list. I would take MQ at the drop of a dime. Except for his injury history the guy is awesome. We’ve all seen his talent and we should all want him. Big bucks yes, but the funny thing about that is we have so much cap space.

MQ
I totally agree. HUGE upside on that guy. I just don’t think that the Saints let him go for nothing….They’ll try to match or even franchise him.

Not Reese's style
to go heavy into the free agent market. I wouldn’t expect any big free agent signings.
He seems very invested in building from youth
It is possible he could trade up and go for a big receiver in the draft.
Toomer is great this year, but I don’t think he has that much gas left in the tank. Hixon and Smith are doing fine, but I don’t think either one is a dominating number 1 receiver.
That’s the pity of Plax – he has the talent to be one of the top 6 receivers in the league.

Yeah, but...
Plax is a big time receiver, but its not predicated on speed or precise route running, he has great size and hands…..so we can find another big play receiver who might actually do things that Plax couldnt do….and perhaps trading up to get a first rounder might be a feasible way to do so.

Free Agents
I’m just worried about having the same problem as the Eagles
by queler on Dec 2, 2008 4:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
by problems..
you mean that we need to sign a bigtime free agent wide receiver??
(eagles fan, I’m not here to start anything dont worry)
I don’t think we need to sign one, a TE yes, but thats a different story.
desean jackson, kevin curtis and hank baskett are solid, although I would want a bigtime WR like TJ anyday for mcnabb..
Honestly I think the Giants have the deepest receiving corps in the league and will still burn my eagles this sunday :(
losing plax is good for your team

i just mean
that deep is one thing, but a lack of true #1 can cause problems
