Your O -line must be pretty good.

In this area we hear all about the "old gunslinger " Brett Farve but ,Warner is having the best year he’s had in a decade. We know about your receivers but, I expect there’s got to be more than just the skill position players contributing.
2) Tell us about the nature of your D. I haven’t heard anything at all about them.

We're only gonna score 17 points?

I just read a great article on ESPN

most analysis by Dilfer, but he said the o-line actually not too good. Their running success is the results of draws and misdirection rather then moving people off the ball, and their pass blocking is an illusion due to Warner continuing to get the ball out quickly

by queler on Nov 20, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

that's pretty much spot on

The offensive line’s success (if you can call it that) is a result of the offensive weapons more than them actually being a good unit. I will say that they’re better in pass protection than they are at run blocking, but KW’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly doesn’t hurt. Any success that they have in the running game is thanks to a passing attack that forces defenses to adjust.

As for the defense they’re sort of an enigma. They rank 11th in yards per game and are in the top 10 against the run (not that, that matter against you guys) but they’re still giving up alot of points (22.8 per game for 18th in the league). The front seven is getting stronger as Gabe Watson gets more games under his belt (fractured knee cap in the off season caused him to miss all of camp and first couple of games) and hopefully the secondary continues to improve as first round rookie, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie gets more games under his belt. If I had to describe them right now, I’d say they’re a undersized, quick and aggressive defense that plays much better with a lead. Clancy Pendergast is known for coming up with some bizarre defensive schemes and I’d imagine he’ll dial up something special for the Giants ground game.

Huh?

“KW’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly”

Good golly, we NEVER saw that side of Warner when he was in a Giants uniform. The man took a sack every 3.4 seconds. When the heck did this change?

KW

I guess old dogs can learn new tricks. I think OC Todd Haley has really pounded into his head to get rid of the ball and if he does hold onto it, he’s doing a better job of protecting it when he is sacked. I also think they’re running more plays that are designed for him to get rid of the ball quickly.

Pett….. Pett….. Pett….. Pett….. Pett…..

running game?

Whats up cgolden, hows the running game going for the cardinals as of now, and tell me a bit about their defense? thanx

by trueblue08 on Nov 20, 2008 2:50 PM EST reply actions

The running game is nearly non-existent. If they can muster 75 yards or so against you guys, I’d be ecstatic. As queler said above, most of the rushing yards come via draws or misdirection. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cardinals ran some ‘wild-cat’ on you guys though. They used it a couple of weeks ago and this is the kind of big game where I could see them pull it out again.

As for the defense, I covered a lot of it above but if you’re asking about what kind of defense they run, it’s kind of confusing. It’s officially a ‘hybrid 3-4’ and the best way to describe it is that it looks like a 4-3 most of the time but they play like a 3-4. The guy to watch is Adrian Wilson. He’s being used around the LOS more and more each week and I’d imagine he’ll be a mainstay in the box this week with the Giants running game. He’ll also blitz off the corner a couple of times so Eli will have to locate him before the snap.

Run game

The Cards run game basically consists of 5-10 yard passes.

Not so much about this weeks game

but I was just curious about Matt Leinart. How is he handling not playing and the fact that Warner has been so successful, and what do you think the Cardinals plans are going forward. It seems like they’re gonna have to make a Brees/Rivers Favre/Rodgers type decision pretty soon. I was a Leinart fan when he was in college, and I still think he could be a good QB in this league, but I was wondering if you think it will be with the Cardinals or with someone else?

Also, unrelated, but it’s pretty well known that the Cardinals haven’t exactly been the most successful franchise in the NFL. That said, you have a very talented team this year that seems to have a bright outlook (especially when you consider that the rest of the NFC West is so messed up, none of those teams looks close to being competitive)…so all that said, what would you consider a “successful” season to be this year? Just winning the West? Getting a bye? Winning one postseason game? Nothing short of a Super Bowl? etc…

by cjmulrain on Nov 20, 2008 3:38 PM EST reply actions

ahh the Leinart question

 - Cardinals fans are pretty split on Leinart. Some would rather just cut him now, save the money and ride KW until the wheels fall off. Other fans, and I fall in this category if anyone is wondering, think that Leinart can and will be a solid NFL QB. I do think it’ll be in Arizona and I wouldn’t rule out it being as early as next year. Leinart had a great off season (hot tub photos excluded), a really good camp and preseason until the debacle in Oakland (which ultimately wasn’t all that different from what KW did in NYJ). He’s come a long way since struggling as a second year QB learning his second offense in as many seasons. He wouldn’t be putting up KW numbers right now but the Cardinals would still be a decent team with Leinart at the helm and he’ll get his chance in the future.

- Expectations are a new idea in AZ so we’re still trying to figure that out, LOL. No seriously, it’s tough to say b/c it obviously depends on how other teams (the Giants included) finish the season. It’s easier to say that the general consensus is that they’ll finish with a 10-6 or 11-5 record (11 wins if Sunday is a W). If that’s good enough for a first round bye, then so be it. As far as once they get in, I’d expect them to beat a lower seeded team at home, whether that be Tampa, Washington, Carolina, Dallas etc. Since the road to the SB would likely roll through the Meadowlands, I’d have a hard time seeing the Cardinals win such a big game on the road (east coast sux) in the cold (cold weather and slick balls have a way of becoming KW’s kryptonite), but my answer might be different if we see you guys again :-). Until then, we’re honestly just enjoying the ride.

Tim Hightower

I saw him play as a junior in college and was quite impressed.. how do you think he’s coming along?

by Hoyadestroya85 on Nov 20, 2008 4:39 PM EST reply actions

Timmy

He’s been good enough to supplant Edge as the feature back, which is something I don’t think he would have even bet on, so he’s got to be doing pretty well for a 5th round rookie. It’s tough to tell to much about any RB’s right now b/c the OL isn’t great but he’s got some skills. Ten games into his career I’m certainly impressed and so far I’d say the Marion Barber III comparisons are somewhat justified.

I too saw Hightower in college

he was a monster. I still think Omar Cuff was better (in college anyway). I wish he had gotten a chance in the pros….1-AA players are showing they belong in the NFL

If we

could shut down one of your super wideouts, which one would give the Giants the best shot to stop the O? Larry or Anquan or maybe Beaston (although that would be a shocker)? And are your TE’s used primarily as blockers to make a comfier pocket or do they go out and catch balls too?

by ProudYankee on Nov 20, 2008 5:45 PM EST reply actions

good question

And honestly I don’t know the answer to that one. My initial thought would be Boldin b/c he seems like Warner’s security blanket most of the time but the offense didn’t miss a beat when he was out for two games (35.5 ppg in those two). Fitz, Q and Breaston are all capable of hurting a defense so I’m not sure taking one of them out of game would make a huge difference. If you could shut down an element of the passing game though, I’d say limiting their yards after catch would greatly benefit a defense. Boldin’s toughness and Breaston’s shiftiness lead to quite a bit of YAC.

Tight ends are just blockers. If they catch three balls for 25 yards, it’s an awful good game.

Kurt Warner

Do you think the Cardinals will re-sign him at the end of the season?

by marakara on Nov 20, 2008 10:54 PM EST reply actions

No doubt in my mind

From what we’ve heard it’ll probably be a two year deal, although he’s probably out performed the incentive laden contract that they were talking about before the season.

Two Questions....

1- Which Cardinals players are underrated by analyst and aren’t really known by opposing team fans?
2- Do fans miss when the Cards were in the same division as the Giants?

Joe L

by kinglongo on Nov 21, 2008 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Underrated: For as much heat as the Cardinals secondary takes, I think Roderick Hood is a bit underrated. He’s not great, and he’s probably better suited to be a #2, but he’s showed some signs this year of developing into a decent player. He’s questionable for Sunday though. Another guy is Antonio Smith. Darnell Dockett gets all the notoriety on the defensive line but Smith is a solid player as well. He’s good against the run and get to QB more than your average 3-4 DE.

- It’s a bad habit to have any kind of memory as a Cardinals fan so I wouldn’t say we miss anything in the past. I’m sure most fans and the team in general certainly doesn’t miss all the east coast games.
