'Earth, Wind & Fire' meets 'The Wall'
We are all anxious to find out who will win the battle between New York's No. 1 ranked rushing offense and Baltimore's No. 1 ranked rushing defense.
Making it even more fun to watch, Newsday tells us the last time this happened was in 2002.
The players are also anxious to see how this will turn out, and you have to love the faith each side is showing in its own ability.
Here is a look at the matchup from the Baltimore Sun.
Both sides are emphatic they will succeed.
"We love it when people say we can't do something," New York center Shaun O'Hara said during a conference call. "I think that is when this team rises up. Again, Baltimore is going to be another great challenge for us, and we certainly know what kind of defense they run and the type of personnel that they have. So, again, it is going to be another physical game."
Countered Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata: "You've got to believe what you're saying, and we believe we can stop anybody, and they believe they can run on anybody. So we'll see how it goes."
Though there are other matchups on the field that could factor into Sunday's outcome, it's rare for two opposing units to be the best in one particular category. The Giants rank first in the NFL in rush yards per game (168.9), yards per carry (5.2) and runs of at least 20 yards (15). Twelve of New York's 28 touchdowns this season have been produced by the running attack.
The Giants have rushed for 200 or more yards in four games, including 200 against the Dallas Cowboys and 219 against the Philadelphia Eagles in back-to-back weekends.
Using a three-back rotation of Brandon Jacobs (the league's fourth-leading rusher with 806 yards and nine touchdowns), Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw, New York has gained 100 yards on the ground in eight of nine games.
Establishing a ground plan is critical because it relieves some of the pressure on quarterback Eli Manning and sets up the league's 16th-ranked passing attack.
"We know it's going to be tough, but we've got to try to be physical so we can get into some of our play action and we can get into some third-and-manageable situations by running the ball and setting that up," Manning said. "You never know what kind of game it's going to turn into and what's working, but we feel confident. Whether it's throwing or running, we've just got to be efficient and play smart."
Offenses have struggled to be efficient against the Ravens, who rank first in average yards (65.4) and yards per carry (2.9) and are tied for first in rushing touchdowns surrendered (one) and runs of at least 20 yards (one). The defense has gone 28 consecutive games without allowing a 100-yard rusher and has permitted just 18 100-yard rushers since 1999, fewest in the league. The most an opposing offense has gained on the ground against the Ravens is the 76 yards by the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 13.
Ravens defensive end Trevor Pryce said the unit takes pride in its tradition of stopping the run.
"It comes from the fact that we can do it," he said. "It comes from the fact that you watch how we play the run, and that's the thing our coaches harp on. [They say:] 'If you guys want to play fun football, you've got to do the dirty work first, and that's stopping the run. Then you guys can get after the quarterback, [get] interceptions and all those types of things if you stop the run.' And we've been good at that around here for a long time."
When I think about Sunday, though, I have this feeling that it might just be a game the Giants put in the hands of Eli Manning. Obviously, I feel good about that. I know Joe Flacco has been good for the Ravens, but if it comes down to a battle of the QBs that is advantage Giants.

Who won out
In the ’02 matchup. The defense or the offense? Just wondering.

Chiefs
No. 1 rushing offense totaled 185 yards on the ground, but lost to Denver, 31-24. Hat tip to Newsday for the info on that.

Great points on a great blog
Love the content I’ve seen, as your posters are pretty knowldgeable and fair, unlike some of the Ohio teams that I just won’t stoop down to their level and call them out! ;)
I guess it all comes down to the unstoppable force versus the immoveable object. If it comes down to the two QB’s, the Giants at home w/ Eli should whomp us as we are on the road with a rookie QB from a “small” school who wasn’t even supposed to be the starter all season. Of course, that’s why they play the game. I’m hoping for a repeat of your Vikings game from last year. You never know….

Thank you. We have enjoyed the back and forth all week, and will continue to do so. I always want BBV to be about intelligent conversation, and I think the community respects that. We love to find fans of other teams who enjoy that as well, and your folks from ‘Beatdown’ have been fun to chat with. I am looking forward to Sunday now much more than I ever thought I would.

God
If it is a repeat of the Vikings game from last year. I’m going to have to go all EMO.
That is the only game I have ever watched at my future brother-in-law’s.(65" Plasma HDTV) And it was a debacle. I have since watched every game including the playoff run and every game this season(minus Cincy we listened to that one) With my dad on his 32" Regular Def old school TV in our family room.
My brother-in-law got really offended when I wouldn’t go to his house to watch the Super Bowl…
Let’s just say I won’t be watching much giants football at the brother-in-law’s. But I have to be there for thanksgiving this year, so at least there will be football on then, and thankfully no G-men.
Hopefully that was an amusing story for your mornings.

I would much prefer
a repeat of this year’s 44-6 victory over Seattle.

superstitions
i’m in Indiana so I usually have to go watch the game at a restaurant/bar. during the playoff run, i sat in the same seat at the same bar and ordered the same thing at halftime for each game. i’m sure that directly contributed to the SB victory.
as a side note, i spilled a Dr. Pepper on my jeans during Game 1 of the ’99 Eastern Conference First Round between the Knicks and Heat. the Knicks took Game 1 by like 20 and i wore the same pants for the entire 1999 playoff run, until Tim Duncan/David Robinson conquered my Dr. Pepper stained pants.

HAHA... hilarious
I can relate, I cut my Kerry Collins jersey in half the night before the Super Bowl and drove it to a dumpster by my house lol… in my head, it was to close the door on us losing Super Bowls. I also slept with Jeff Garcia’s wife the night before the wild-card game against TB to throw him off. The things I do for my team.

same here
I was going to big bars with huge plasma screens with my friends, but I started watching the games at home, inclding playoffs and superbowl, (my friends were offended that I did not watched the games with them, all cowboys and packer fans) so I watched the games by myself. And lastly everytime I wear a giant gear, (t-shirt, caps, jersey) the Gmen loose, so I stopped doing that. the last time I was wearing a cap they lost to Cleveland

unstoppable vs immovable
totally agree. honestly this game could go anywhere. The ravens could get stuffed with the run but Flacco could shock everyone with 270 passing yards and 2TDs. The Giants could possible break our non-100-yard rusher streak. The Giants could get stuffed on the Run and Eli might just pass to Plax all day and let him abuse Rolle. The game could turn on a pick six from Ed Reed. Justin Tuck might force a fumble from Flacco that gets returned for a touchdown.
This game is just so well matched it could go any way.
