Hump day Giants Notes

Giants_notebook_200_medium

Here are some Giants notes this Wednesday afternoon:

  • The Giants have re-signed Andre Woodson to the practice squad and waived OL Cliff Louis.
  • DE Mathias Kiwanuka was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Pittsburgh Sunday, when he had three of the Giants' five sacks and two in the fourth quarter.
  • Tom Coughlin address the media this morning and said he expects Cowboys TE Jason Witten to play, as well as injured CB Anthony Henry. The Coach said he also expects Brad Johnson to start, but the Giants will be prepared for Brooks Bollinger as well.
  • David Tyree's status will be decided by this time next week.
  • Finally, injured DE Osi Umenyiora spoke with Ralph Vacchiano from the Daily News yesterday, and said his rehab is going so well, that he could have been ready for the playoffs. He says, however, that he understood why the Giants had to place him on season-ending injured reserve. Osi also talks about Plax, and his second career.

At the end of that story is a great comment from a reader named "jakek1", and I thought what he said was so good I figured I would put it up in lights for all to see:

jakek1:

This is going to turn out to be the biggest blessing in disguise. Osi will come back next year healthier and hungrier than ever. Meanwhile, Kiwi and Tuck are getting full time starters snaps and immeasurable experience. Tuck is learning how to handle constant doubleteams and Kiwi is playing full time DE as well now. Furthermore, Tollefson and the interior linemen are flourishing with the increased role and pressure to make plays.

Next year, when we are going for the 3-peat, god willing, Osi will not let this team rest on their laurels. He'll come in and shift either Tuck or Kiwi into that hybrid, who-knows-where-the-hell-he's-coming-from pash-rushing position. It will be like drafting a first-round guaranteed pro-bowl DE to add to our already stellar pash rush.

Speaking of draft picks.....while we're trying to decide what to do with the plethora of picks we have, Dallas will be waiting until the second round to use one of their three picks to fill one of their 8 needs!! Ahh, with Osi back next year....the rich get richer.

Nice job jakek1, I couldn't have said it any better.

There

won’t be enough TE’s RB’s and O linemen to stop our rush. But let’s call it how it is. That god willing, 3-peat doesn’t happen without Spags calling the shots. We did make him the highest paid coordinator but if a team that entices him flashes the mula he may feel ready to take a head coaching position. Although I can’t see him building the “Rome” of defenses and leaving right when were about to peak. As good as our D has looked, we’re only tapping into it’s full potential as is the offense. Osi, Kiwi, Tuck, Alford, Cofield, Robbins, and Tollefson. And we haven’t even seen Alford in weeks. We are rich with linemen.

You're right

that is one thing I don’t even want to think about it. Spags leaving, hopefully the teams needing a head coach are so horrendous that he decides to stay and build something good with the Giants.
(If he goes, we could still hire the eagles LB coach, I think)

by Bajaserge on Oct 29, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

i've been thinking about when spagnuolo goes

The Giants are all about getting the best players on the field.. so i have an idea to solve that.. it gets all three defensive ends, the tackles and pierce on the field…
the 3-4
you put Robbins, Cofield and Tuck on the D-Line, rotate in alford
then as the outside linebackers you have Osi on the weak side and Kiwi on the Strong side Pierce at the Sam and Blackburn/Clark at the Will…
it’s an interesting concept we may not have dominant enough personnel, but it would be a great pass rushing package..

by Hoyadestroya85 on Oct 29, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds

interesting. But it just won’t happen. We have athletes and all but they are groomed for this defense. Switching it up on a D oh so young, would stunt it’s growth and Reese just won’t have that. It’s 4-3 for years to come.

by ProudYankee on Oct 29, 2008 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

it's just a thought

i’m just afraid that teams are going to figure us out

by Hoyadestroya85 on Oct 29, 2008 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

3-4

I don’t think the Giants would switch, but … Kiwanuka would make a great OLB in a 3-4 defense. He has the perfect skill set.

by Ed Valentine on Oct 29, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

but

that sounds great and all on third down, but what about first? Kiwi would be a good OLB, maybe Tuck might be a good 3-4 end, but we still have no nose tackle, which as has been said is crucial to the 3-4. All our DEs are prototypical 4-3 ends, that’s one of the biggest reasons we’ve never switched because of Strahan. Maybe a guy like Alford could be a 3-4 end. It’s more the personnel on the line that we don’t have

by queler on Oct 29, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

but

there isn’t a behemoth run stuffing D-Tackle.. that’s why i think the cowboys struggle against the run, they don’t have a Vince Wilfork or a Shaun rogers

by Hoyadestroya85 on Oct 29, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You're exactly right.

We need a big run stuffer. Ratliff is playing well but he could really be a awesome player in the 4-3. A four man line of Ellis, Ware, Ratliff and Johnson sounds really good to me.

by houseofprime on Oct 29, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

they already have.

it doesn’t do them much good however if they don’t have a qb capable of making a quick release on a 3 step drop and a receiver willing to run slant routes behind the d-line.

Godfather Clause

When Spag’s contract runs its course, I think Reese might want to just basically say that if/when Coughlin steps down, the job is his. That would lock him up!

by Cody K on Oct 29, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

If

he wants to wait three more seasons after this one. I doubt it. I think he will get an offer he won’t be able to turn down. There will be some good jobs open.

by Ed Valentine on Oct 29, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

But you never know

The Giants could win it all this year and Coughlin could say “You know what, we proved we were no fluke, I’ve accomplished something no coach of the Giants ever did, time to go play with the grandkids”, you never know what is going to happen.

Theres a problem with with Jakek1's comment.

The Cowboys still have 9 picks in the draft with at least 1 in every round except the 1st. Thats what many people who have criticized the trade have failed to mention.

by houseofprime on Oct 29, 2008 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

this is true

but are you honestly saying that Roy Williams and a practice squad/depth player (7th rounder) is worth a starter (3rd rounder), and a first round pick (which is looking pretty decent right now maybe that pick is hovering somewhere in the low 20’s as we speak.. whereas the giants get this pick, another second rounder (please suck the rest of the year saints, and sign Vilma to an extension so we can get a 2010 first rounder) and really.. all the giants gave up was a locker room cancer.

by Hoyadestroya85 on Oct 29, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

They have a 3rd and a 6th round pick already

so I look at as Roy for a 1st round pick. It could be a relatively late 1st round pick. I believe Roy Williams is better than any player they would have picked in the 1st next year. Roy Williams is a great talent that was held down by bad QBs, bad o-line and just a really bad organization overall.

by houseofprime on Oct 29, 2008 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

I'm a big fan or Roy

and i have been since he was at UT.. but i just think that this trade was about 2 months late, and they gave up too much for it.. if you already have a third round pick.. that means you can have 4 starters or quality depth players come out of the upcoming draft.. now there are less

2 media related notes

first, on yesterday’s TMQ, I saw this sentence: “Coaches such as Belichick, Coughlin and Dungy have been able to find middle ground between their athletes’ desire for celebrity status and the teamwork required to win.” A year ago, could anyone have foreseen that Coughlin would be mentioned in the same sentence as Belichick and Dungy as one of the best coaches in the league? Crazy, but awesome.

In the not so awesome category, I was listening to the “Sports Reporters” on ESPN Radio in DC, with Kevin Pollin and Steve Czaban, and they were talking about how amazing the Redskins are. One of them (I don’t listen to them enough to be able to tell who is who) was talking about how he belives the Redskins are gonna win the NFC East. The other guy says “what about the Giants.” The first guy says “I really think they’re gonna lose their last 7 games. I don’t even think they’re a playoff team.” They then read through the Giants schedule, and the guy said they’d beat the Cowboys this week, but lose each of the last 7 games. The other guy said, “there’s no way they lose all 7. I have them going 3-4 or 4-3” and the first one was like “no, they’re gonna lose all 7. They’re not that good. Did you see how lucky they were this weekend, if the Steelers had a long snapper that game would have been over, b/c then the Giants got the ball after the safety and went and scored.”

Of course, they ignored that the Giants were GETTING THE BALL anyway on the play that resulted in the safety, and would have had better field position than they did after the safety. The whole segment really made my blood boil.

he is

He’s a major homer. But still, NY radio hosts can be homers, but not like that. Even when I went to school outside Philly I never heard anything quite so delusional. He had them losing, at home, to the Ravens and the Vikings.

by cjmulrain on Oct 29, 2008 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

redskins radio

Is the funniest thing in the world. After every win they are force to be reckoned with, their going to win the East and go to the Super Bowl. after every loss (even against the Rams that put them at like 5-2) they think their season is over, major changes must be made. I’ve been living down here for 6 years, I’m telling you, it’s like predictably clockwork and hysterical.

by queler on Oct 29, 2008 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll pile on

I’ve lived in DC for 15 years, moved down here the year after the Redskins last won the Super Bowl and every year since, the homers like Czaban, Jurgensen, and George Michael have them winning the Super Bowl in August and, well, you’ve seen the results. If you’ve ever listened to Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff (yes, Sam Huff!), and that other guy call the ‘Skins games on the radio you’d know how the Redskins are viewed generally in the DC area. Their broadcasts sound like a couple of Redskin-fan buddies sitting on a couch watching the game. The only sports personality in DC with any perspective on them is John Riggins — he’s great and I was disappointed when Snyder bought the local sports radio station and Riggins’ show was canceled (I think that’s what happened). I’ve got a DC friend who’s a Raiders fan and the day after the Redskins beat Dallas, he sent a bunch of us an email subject “it’s nice to be able to go back to hating the redskins again” … you get the idea …

by da cut on Oct 29, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

oh man

Jurgenson and Huff are the WORST. Even my girlfriend, who doesn’t really like football, laughs at how bad they are.

That said, I know they’re homers, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but what ruffled my feathers was the way they were dismissing the Giants as if we were the 2007 Lions or something. They were all like “who have they beaten? The Rams, the Seahawks, the 49ers, and the Bengals? They’re not that good.” And of course they discount the game we beat them, apparently that one doesn’t count. It just pissed me off. You can be a homer for your team without putting other teams down. Most actual Redskins fans I’ve come across have been like that: they respect the Giants even while rooting for the Skins.

by cjmulrain on Oct 29, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

the Redskins poor showing against the Giants had nothing to do with the team they were playing and it was the first game of the year … I don’t know what the excuse is for their loss to the Rams.

The point is, I take what those guys say with a grain of salt. Anybody watching Sunday’s game knew the momentum had changed prior to the bad snap

To make matters worse, when I lived in DC

Kornhauser was part of the local sports commentary mix. Is that still the case, or is he confining his nonsense to his “color” commentary at televised football games?

by george cronin on Oct 30, 2008 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

He has a radio show but it’s more American Idol then sports. I don’t know how I can love him so much on his radio show and PTI and yet hate him on MNF

by queler on Oct 30, 2008 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I never heard him on radio.

He had a T^V show with Sonny and a few others.

Kornheiser

is the best on the radio. He does a great show, and his ranting style works great there. I miss the days when he used to on ESPN instead of Colin Cowdung.

by Ed Valentine on Oct 30, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

he's off the air for now

the station he was on switched formats, it’s now “Federal Talk Radio” – they still broadcast Nationals games, but other than that it’s not a sports network

I used to like

Bram Weinstein, always thought he was pretty good, I don’t think he’s had his own show in a while though, and I think he just jumped to ESPN.

by queler on Oct 30, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

oh

and Riggo still works for Redskins Radio, but he doesn’t have a permanent time slot…he’s basically the fill-in guy. He’s their version of Steve Somers, only FAR less annoying

by cjmulrain on Oct 30, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

god I can't stand Steve Somers

If it’s a clear day, once the sun goes down, for some reason I can pick up the FAN on the way home, and on the odd day there isn’t a baseball it’s always Somers.

I

hope Pitt smashes them in the mouth. They kind of have too. They can’t afford to go 0-3 against the NFC east.

by ProudYankee on Oct 29, 2008 6:43 PM EDT reply actions

I could see it happening

the Skins rely heavily on Portis and the run-game. The Steelers are great at stopping the run. Doesn’t bode well for the Skins.

Just wanted to say

Thank you New York Football Giants for winning Super Bowl 42. I don’t know what I would do if the Phillies had won the World Series and none of the teams that I root for had won one in over a decade and a half.

My college roommate (big Philly fan) was at the game tonight, I texted him congrats when it ended, he texted me back a video of them celebrating on the field. So to get him back, I fired up my DVR, filmed The Play on my cell phone, and sent it back to him. The fact is, they’d ALL trade this World Series for an Eagles SB…

as a Giants/Mets fan living in the Philadelphia area

I was angered by the high level of douchebaggery shown by the Non-Phillies fans..
well we have three super bowls they have none, my devils have 3 Stanley Cups, the Flyers have 2 (in 15 more years), and the mets and Phillies have the exact same number of championships (the mets in 80 less years, so they have some catching up to do)
Oh man, if Villanova has a crappy season i’m gonna die

by Hoyadestroya85 on Oct 29, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yea

I’ll give my roommate some credit though, he’s legitimately a Phillies fan. When we started college he claimed to be a Braves/Phils fan, but once Glavine (his favorite player) signed with the Mets he pretty much ditched the Braves and went full-time for the Phils.

I will say that as much as I love the Mets (and they are my favorite sports team, though a few more seasons like this and I may have to drop them for my health), it’s times like these I wish I was a Yankees fan. That whole “26 World Championships” thing would be nice to throw in their faces right about now. Oh well, it could be worse: I could be a Jets fan…

by cjmulrain on Oct 29, 2008 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing is worse

Than being a Jets fan.

Phillies won the world series, and I could care less. Ed said it best on Bugs and Cranks, this is one of the worst World Series of my lifetime. I just think its funny that alot of people talked about how bad the NL East was this year, and as a Met fan, I will agree with that, the NL East was a lousy division, but the World Series winner comes out of it. Further proof that all you have to do in baseball is keep your head above water until mid-August, get hot, and get in, and then anything can happen.

This rerpresents my last baseball post until at least Feburary, this is going to take awhile to get out of my system.
