Giants fair-weather fans
from Stampede Blue (an Indianapolis Colts blog): "I'm not bashing Giants fans, per say. I live in New York part of the year and I can tell you from first hand experience that Giants fans are THE most fair weather fans in football. It's a major reason why the Giants are so good on the road and so bad at home. Regardless of whether the Giants play poorly, ok, decent, or good... they get booed. Giants fans always doubt their players, always wish they had this guy or that guy, and always wish the NFL was more like the MLB (so that the Giants could just buy championships, like the Yankees did)."
Hmmm, fair-weather eh? Coming from a Colts fan? The same Colts fans that didn't start selling out the tiny RCA Dome until they were 6-0 in the 2003 season? The same fans that didn't give a shit about their team until the '03 AFC Championship game appearance? The same fans from a city where they have already given up on the Pacers after they missed the playoffs for the first time in ten years?
Those Colts fans were really coming out in 1984-2001 to the RCA Dome to support their team. But, those fair-weather Giants fans don't support their team at all. Their season-ticket waiting list is only 17 years long, no big deal.
Fair-weather eh? Coming from a Colts fan, that's fucking hilarious. Look in the mirror.

I mean, think about Indiana (or don't--an empty mind is pretty much the same thing). If you scraped all the social outlets and cultural opportunities of that state together in one place, you could fit it all into Bryant Park without removing the carousel. After you get past the Colts and the Pacers, it's pretty tough times.
Now imagine the legitimate frustrations of 1) being given generally short shrift by the national media because, let's face it, you're a tiny market; 2) dumping out in the first round in spite of repeated 'good fortune' associated with the officiating crews throughout the season, and 3) the bitterness of knowing that Peyton pre-filmed an end-of-season disappointment commercial in anticipation of just such a failure.
All to see your arch-rival, nemesis and international bad-guy New England Patriots, winners of 3-in-7, travel to AZ to take on a freshly likeable, hard-nosed, bad-assed, storied franchise led by none other than your hero's kid brother! Who wouldn't be bitter, deluded and slightly deranged.
The sad fact is just as they will never understand irony or sarcasm, Colts fans will never understand the passion that we in the east have for our teams: how we own their failures and shortcomings, taking it all to heart. How our teams become like family members and how allegiance is passed through generations. And how, in spite of all that, we can still see that there is more to life than football and sermons from Tony Dungy. How we can take a measured look at it all, love it for what it is without puffing it up into some weird validation for living where we live.
Because, frankly, there are a lot of great reasons to live in New York or New England. But I can't think of a single one for living in Indiana. Unless it's that it's not Kentucky.
Love ya, Ponies. See you next year.

Hey, go easy on KY...
Of course, they hate all things NY. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

lets not go too far
i went to school at IU and have now been living in indianapolis for three years. the reason for living in indy is that it is a great city with wonderful and friendly people. and they are good sports fans, they have to be with (soon to be) three world-class facilities: the Indy Motor Speedway, Conseco and Lucas Oil. my point was that i was here in 2001 and there were very few Colts fans that i knew during that 6-10 season...now you can't go two feet without seeing five of them. thats why when i heard BBS (who is a fine blogger by the way), calling the giants fair-weather fans, i thought it was ridiculous.
and just as a side note, tony dungy has more integrity in his pinky finger than bill belichick has in his whole body. he is a classy guy and the colts organization as a whole is a class act. i know the patriots have their number, but im sure most colts fans are happy that they dont have to root for pieces of shit like rodney harrison.

Let's not cast aspersions.
And don't get me started on Dungy. Or BBS. "Fine" is in the eye of the reader, I suppose.

Good candidates:
Dominic Rhodes, 4-game suspension, shortly after leaving the Colts, also drove drunk, and beat his wife in 2002, while a member of the Colts team.
Mike Doss, Gunslinger
Nick Harper, wife beater
Monte Reagor, harasses his ex
Marlin Jackson hits people with bottles.
Joseph Jefferson, drinkin', drivin' and gunslingin'
Dexter Reid, guns n' drugs
And where Randy Moss pretends to moon crowds, Peyton Manning actually moons female trainers.
Look, I'm not saying Rodney was right. He wasn't. He also didn't need to come out and admit what he did, as the NFL does not release information regarding the type of substance abused. What I am saying is that it does no good to run down other teams and players for cheating or being 'classless' because sooner or later, you'll find your own team on that side of the line.
And as far as the 'beating women' thing with Randy? I think you should look into all the allegations in that case and we'll all wait to see what the outcome is. I have a hunch it's a shakedown.

anybody who proselytizes...
note to anyone who would find a double standard in the previous two sentences, Dungy has spoken of his off the field avvocations, Belichick has not. virtually all coverage of Belichick is based on speculation rather than reported interview material.

I'm actually
And say what you want about Bellichick, but the guy can coach. And from everything I've seen/heard, he's actually a pretty decent guy away from the football field, he just turns into douchebag numero uno once he steps on the field. Plus, without him, are we really sure we would have won any Super Bowls? Parcells is 0 for forever without BB as his Defensive coordinator.

Pats fans are bigger
I don't think it's the worst thing in the world, and a perfect season and handsome quarterback will pull casual/indifferent fans into actively rooting for a team or buying a sweatshirt or two, and that's understandable. But Pats used to never sell out games at that old crappy stadium, and given the fact that they represent all of New Englad it seems like a lot of former Giant fans recently made the migration over.
I think this guy misses the point if he thinks being super-critical of your team makes you a fiarweather fan. I like the Red Sox (I'm a Mets fan) and their fans, but I can't stand Pats fans for the most part BECAUSE while Sox fans are realistic - which often manifests itself in pessimism and criticalness - Pats fans call into the radio everyday and predict 50 point wins, and close games only if the very good team on the other side can force 5 TURNOVERS!! They are literally the same as the Bears fans caricatured in those old SNL skits (Brady versus Jesus? Brady!). Those are apparently the opposite of fair-weather fans?
