BREAKING NEWS: Paper says Giants will sign Mitchell

According to the Star-Ledger the Giants have reached a one-year, $1 million deal with ex-Kansas City linebacker Kawika Mitchell.

So, it looks like Jerry Reese has finally found some  help for the Giants defense -- without spending a fortune.

I've reached out to our friends over at Arrowhead Pride, which covers the Chiefs, for info about Mitchell. I'll let you know what I find out.

Your thoughts?

NOTE: The Houston Texans did match the Giants offer to free-agent fullback Vonta Leach.

[UPDATE:] Takeo Spikes, the other linebacker on the market, has landed in Philadelphia via trade. An interesting day for linebackers in the NFC East. I'm sure Bleeding Green Nation will have some thoughts on the Spikes acquisition.

1 year, 1 million
Basically no risk to the Giants and every reason for Mitchell to prove he's worth more this year. Not a bad move.

Mitchell
This is a really nice move. If he is playing well midway thru the season, the Giants can think about extending him if both parties feel it is a good match. If he bombs, it's just a one year commitment. I still find it hard to believe, though, that this is the best deal he could get. I remember when free agency first started, the Lions were hot for him.

Best deal?
I also find it strange that Mitchell flew so far under the radar. He isn't a great player, but if Visanthe Shiancoe can get a mega-deal I can't believe this guy couldn't. Anyway, this seems like a  no-risk move that doesn't cost much. Exactly what Reese was waiting for.

Is it legit?
It's legit. I don't like to play the "I think it might happen" or "My sources tell me" game that some bloggers excel at. All the various beat writers have reported it, and Ernie Palladino at the Journal News says the official announcement could come Tuesday.

Draft
If this deal does happen, do the Giants still go after a LB with the 1st pick? Seems to me they should go after a corner?

Corner
This is something we can debate for the next month. Personally, unless you have a 'can't miss' guy I think corner is the riskiest position to draft. Those guys usually take a year or more to figure out how to play in the NFL. A linebacker or an offensive tackle is more likely to be able to step in and help right away.

brightside
i agree that taking a corner is risky but this is good draft at CB and at safety.  The LB core in this draft seems to have alot of depth so I think the Giants could grab a couple in the later rounds that can still come in and contribute right away.
