Redskins' Taylor dies

Any other news around the NFL is dwarfed this morning by the death of Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins.

Taylor, 24, was shot Monday during a break-in at his home.

Known as a tremendously talented, ferocious-hitting yet erratic safety, Taylor had a somewhat troubled past. Yet teammates said Taylor had put that behind him.

"It's hard to expect a man to grow up overnight," said Redskins teammate and close friend Clinton Portis, who also played with Taylor at the University of Miami. "But ever since he had his child, it was like a new Sean, and everybody around here knew it. He was always smiling, always happy, always talking about his child."

Taylor's girlfriend and 1-year-old daughter were uninjured in the break-in. My condolences to them, the rest of Taylor's family and to the Redskins organization.

Shock
is what I'm experiencing. From what it sounded like in the news last night, everyone had great reason to be optimistic that he would pull out OK.

My hope is that his family enjoys a peace and a hope unlike any other they've had before.

What a tough thing to endure....

he was an impact player and had a bright future ahead of him.  i hope the police do everything they can to fully investiage this situation because it sounds like this was no fluke.  hopefully they can find whoever did this.

that kid was my age.  pretty crazy.

Fluke
Nope, this was not a mistake. Considering two break-ins in 8 days at his home it seems likely someone had targeted Taylor. Try as you might, sometimes you just can't run completely away from your past. This is a real shame.

this blows
ST was a competitor you could respect and appreciate.  real bummer.

im also getting the impression that there is a lot backstory to this conflict.  if there was problems and taylor was avoiding going to the cops because of his rep, etc, then the NFL and probably all the other leagues need to step up and try to change this 'stop snitching' culture horseshit from the top down.  someone like ray lewis and his new found faith needs to do more to.  the list of tragedies is already absurdly long.

definitively a perspective changer for the rest of the season.
